The project

Hmm, the listings are set up for 30 days right now. I would think that would be long enough. Does anyone feel differently about this?

Nice job so far. Is there going to be a duration for the listing. Or add is up till it sells? A buy it now function is a great idea exspecially during the holiday season for impulse buys. Still no mention of fees. Is there going to be a fee structure? A column for shipping prices needs to be there.

A user should be able to go in and remove their listing through the user profile page.

what about removing listings once they are put up?

I was kind of torn between the idea of a classified ad system or an online auction system. I know of a couple sites that tried the classified system and didn't really go anywhere (playpool, billiards.com). But neither of those sites were really getting the amount of traffic we get here.

We had an auction script up on the site for a short time, but it never really went anywhere. (Of course I never pushed it very much).

Having already gotten this far down the classified ad road, I want to go ahead and get this up and see how it goes. Heck, it might crash and burn and it might go well.

I keep forgetting that this is an ads classified and not an auction. However, the buy it now idea or (a button that allow someone to secure the deal first by emailing the lister that they agree to buy the item per the listing amount would be a good replacement).

Again, there has to be a trader section and module to accommodate for trading transaction. Lots of swapping on Az!

Mike also, you should check out the PHP Auction codes use by cueauctions.com... it's simple to implement and I think it better than the Ads classified system you are setting up. I think the cost to implement an auction site to AZ would be less than $200.00 and there are free PHP auction program out there I think by now. My friend is using one at www.buysellcommunity.com. It work pretty good for them and they are racking in about $2500 from Google Ads sense alone.

Check it out.

I liked the cueauction site and was wondering how it was going for him.

I run traffic stats on the main site and the forums seperately and the main site averages around 10,000 users and 50,000 page views a day. Of course that is much larger during a major event.

I think the classified system can work if I promote it on the site. There really isn't a billiards related classified system on the net that I was able to find.

As far as fee goes, Free listing and small final value fee if the item sell may be a good idea. Cueauction was charging and it was never successfully because they didn't have the traffic. Azbilliard has the traffic, but I don't know if the traffic will be at the auction? How's the traffic to rest of your site?

My intention was to offer free basic 2 image ads and only charge if someone wanted to feature their ad in some way.

People can feature their ads in 3 different ways.

They can bold their listing, they can highlight their listing or they can mark the item as featured which gets it listed at the bottom of the main page.

I am interested in the idea of allowing a monthly fee to allow unlimited featured ads, but I worry that someone will sign up for this and add so many featured ads that none of the other featured ads are really seen.

i think it would be nice to offer a flat monthly fee to list however much a seller wants... it wouldnt be usefull to most, but for some of you who make a good side, or main business out of this i can see wanting to pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited listing, rather than charging per item.

Hi Mike,

Sound good..maybe you can have the best of both world by adding some of the function available in the auction system to the classified system like the "Buy it now" feature. Any thoughts on how the classified system will be able to faciliate trade? Can I post a listing saying I'm looking for cash/trade, etc. I think there will be a bigger market for this kind of transaction.

I think I will add a field for the cues for retail price as well as the fields on that grid. I think that should work great for this.

This is going to be a completely separate area of the site. It is not ready for public consumption yet, but you can see the work in progress at ...

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the late input, I really like the way you do categorize, and I am thinking while we're working on buy and sells, there's still a lot of players out there doing trades, should we include it in the categorization? we may put such option under each item you already developed, and maybe after the owner fully described his good, he/she can also add notes for what he's/she's actually looking for, or perhapes, an escrow service can be considered not only to secure each transaction but also raise some funds to support this forum, just my 2 cents.

cueauctions.com is a good idea. but there isnt enough traffic, and he uses it like a personal store.. 95 % of the things on there are his own items...

I have added another menu entry for logged in users that takes you back to your profile page. This will do away with the need to re-login to get to that page.

Mike

MIke,
Good fix. Makes it easier to navigate.

30 days is good. If an ad is updated, ala lowering the price, does is default back to the 30 days?

Mike,
I agree about the monthly ad rate, you're probably right with just charging for the extra's.That will limit the abuse of the "featured" ads.

yes.. i agree with Joe..

also.. instead of having adress in the listing.. could you change it to just STATE and COUNTRY?

i think that would be better for most people.. i know alot would not like to advertise where they live (exactly where) and if you do change it to state and country.. you should make them required fields so people couldnt leave them blank..

also.. did i see somewhere you mentioned something about a Store feature? if your planning on a store feature .. maybe you will want to add a monthly fee on that.. like $10 per month (or less :) ), that way all the people who choose to have one, can load it up.. and it will also bring a somewhat steady income in for the forum.. and it will allow for users to put a link to it in their forum signatures... not all users have the luxury of a web site or the ability to make and maintane one.. i think a store or some sort would be nice..

chris

What if I added a "buy it now" option that someone could click and it would change the item status to 'Hold'. My only concern would be abuse by users.

Hmm, not sure I want to get into this business. Seems like a lot of work for very little return.

If you what to do an escrow service. I could help with that.

No, it would not renew the 30 days on change. But a free ad would not cost anything to renew and I could set up a featured ad to have more time available. Could also change the renewal price for featured ads to be very small.

Not sure on the idea of charging for the store feature. I think it just a nice feature to have. It is already installed, so people can check it out now.

OK, I have a bit more work to do on the classified system over the next few days but I would like you guys to start adding items when you can.

Feel free to use the coupon code "new" in order to set up some featured, bold and highlighted items. Just don't make all of them featured.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

Mike,
I have been selling cues a long time. Selling cues is first come first serve and I think you're asking for trouble any other way. You're bound to get idiots that might want to retaliate against someone and keep tying up there cues, for whatever reason.

Since you aren't getting paid for the service in it's most basic form, don't invite the ulcers.
