With the wonderful Chinese imports and the quality of what's available overseas for imports and the cheap prices that go along with them, it's near impossible for the average USA based cuemaker to make something competitive.
With the future the way it is you'd have to have planned for this 10-15 years ago. Luckily I planned for this. I've had a stash of wood seasoned and properly stored to build about 1000 cues from 2018-2028. I stated hoarding the best shaft wood and conversion cue blanks I could when I was in my late teens and early twenties and have had it carefully seasoned and turned and waiting for over a decade. Only the best and dead straight stuff is still in the shop, anything "out" or that moved was sold off.
I had built over 300 cues by the time I was 22 years old and never signed one of them. To this day I see them bought, played and sold and they go with no name on them.
I'm recently retired and am going to start a very simple line of cues again towards The end of 2017 with playability and feel in mind and since I bought when the buying was good they'll price $200-400 each for a highly customized cue. I've studied splices and joints and even how what type of finish and epoxies used can influence sound and feel so this is cool and the buyer will be able to custom order finish based and the feel and sound they want.
No inlays, no "monsters" here just solid playing cues.
No all I need is a name for the cues, what do you think?
I'll be offering free shafts and cues to Az members to try as well. I have a Patent on a LD shaft model also that's pretty cool and not "gimmicky" at all and I think you'll enjoy them. I know several very high end players that do!
So, if you have a name in mind let me know, otherwise stay tuned...
Thanks!
