The real reason Jeanette Lee should be famous

Thanks for posting, I never knew this, what a lady.

You are welcome. It was QUITE interesting that almost none of her competitors had even a remote idea what she overcame to become a real player. A large number came up to me to say they could never have done it - quite an accomplishment for JL.

Truly remarkable.

What is strange though is that they had to remove the rods from her back and had several surgeries? Since this is a large surgery, they usually do not remove the rods.

Maybe the style surgery she had, posterior surgery (surgery in the thoracic spine) because most times the rods are left in place.

My daughter had the anterior surgery which instead of leaving a scar from the back of her neck to the bottom of her back...posterior surgery (like Jeanette's), it only left a small curve on her left side under her arm. They took several of her ribs out and used them to fuse the extra disc space. but, her rod is still inside her and that surgery has been 17 years ago. Anyway, I am glad my daughter had the doctor she had.

In fact, my sister also had scoliosis and was in a body cast for over 6 months .

You may find it hard to believe that I didn't open my mouth, but I was always wondering what her scar was from but didn't want to make her uncomfortable - and not that she should be.

My brother had the surgery with two rods put in on both sides of his spine.

W,
3 big surgeries to put the rods and bone grafts in - cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine (rods ALL the way from skull to pelvis); then 3 major surgeries to remove them; then 2 major surgeries to put in more rods/screws to fix the points of failure (approached from the front rather than the back since there was too much scar tissue where you saw the scars).

More back surgeries than any patient I have ever had. In 32 years of medicine, I know no patients with even 2 back surgeries that are not on disability...EXCEPT Jeanette. Very few athletes in any sport compete after even 1 back surgery (Peyton Manning had 2 very small, minor neck procedures...kept him out for a year...almost no residual pain or disability). I know NO athletes in ANY sport who became great after 3 back surgeries. Whatever your views on her, it is really a remarkable story....doesn't excuse any faults, but does deserve some measure of respect from me at least.
