cuetechasaurus...It is because he tightens his grip...but not at the end of the stroke...it's at the end of the backswing. While this is not a problem for some of the elite players (and I already said that), it IS a problem for most others, because it "deadens" the 'feel' of letting the cue do the work, and causes the shot to be executed with muscle, rather than finesse (letting the weight of the cuestick and timing create the stroke). In the end, however, it always goes back to rule #1: If you make the ball, you get to shoot again! LOL

I totally agree about what you said in regards to letting the cue do the work. I am one of those players that "releases" the cue on the forward stroke. The problem is that on power shots, even if you release the cue with a very light grip, the cue tip can hit the bed of the table pretty hard and send it up in the air, or if you're using follow, the tip can fly up in the air. Tightening your grip after you hit the cue ball can help prevent that from happening. I don't see a problem with doing that, so long as you don't tighten the grip prematurely.
I know that using a closed bridge can help that because of stability, but on certain power shots ( not all, just some), I feel more comfortable using an open bridge for some reason.
Randy G had mentioned before that follow through is irrelevant, because what happens after you hit the cue ball doesn't change the outcome of the shot. While I don't particularly agree with what he said about follow through, it does help prove my point. If you do it at the end of your stroke after you've hit the ball, it doesn't really matter.
The "muscle" you mentioned doesn't come into play until after you've hit the cue ball.
I will admit that I don't understand how snooker players are able to power a ball with an open bridge and keep the shaft of their cue on the bridge without it going up in the air. I guess when you really have a pure stroke, you can do that. I'm still working on mastering that
And by the way, who are you referring to that tightens his grip on the back swing? I've seen videos of Rempe and it doesn't look like he's squeezing his grip on the back stroke.
