The snap

What is the snap in pool and what does "on the snap" mean as this phrase is new to me.

Scorp-man,
The phrase "on the snap" means the speaker has been spending too much time watching cheesy pool movies, instead of playing pool. I've never heard any real pool players outside of the "Color of Money" use this term. In the movie it means "I'm too cool to say sink the 9 on the break." Please don't use this term anymore, it just makes me uncomfortable every time I hear it.

The Snap means The Break.

This term is used around my area by many pool players, not just those who watch cheesy movies :D

The Phrase "on the snap" refers to someone making the money ball on the break (ie 9 Ball)

Scorpion..."On the snap" is pool jargon for making the winning ball on the break. There was a popular pool magazine in the 70's by the same name. Any poolplayer who has played for 20+ years knows that the 'snap' refers to the break! BTW, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using this term, contrary to what the previous poster said.

u must not get out much

Yes, you guys are right, I stand corrected; its beyond cool. I guess all I can say is, "You da man." (that's cool too, right???).:) :) :)

In my defense (even though its obvious "I don't get out much"), the only people around here that say it are total dweebs in a local bar who yell it loudly before EVERY break, all night in their bar table 9-ball league; and then when the 9 finally goes in after 2 hours of this, they jubilantly bounce up and down saying, "I told you he was going to make it, I told you he was going to make it." About an hour of "on the snap" is about my limit, then I have to leave to go play straight pool - "on the snap" is rarely heard in the straight pool league around here (could be different where you play).

Of course, perhaps its a regional thing - maybe only shortstops say "on the snap" - some places they're cool, world-beaters; and some places they're lunchmeat.

It's used the same way where I play. Some times people will say, "Make the 9 on the snap!" and is usually yelled out by the backer of the player that's breaking. LOL

I'm with Willie on this one. I cringe whenever I hear "Come on [insert preppy pool player's name here], on the snap, man!!!" But then, I pre-date the movie myself and I don't get out much either...

HeterosexualPoolMan,
Thanks for the support (of course this is all just for fun). It is interesting that in hundreds of hours spectating at DCC I've never heard anyone spew out "on the snap." I'm sure it's probably been said, but it's not that often. Aren't there any cool cats or real players down there???

P.S. - Does the phrase really pre-date the movie?? I was only semi-kidding when I implied that the only people I see using it are dabblers who seem to have received the majority of their pool education from Vincent. For the record, I've never said it (and it bothers me to have to keep typing it, so I think I'll bow out of this thread).
