The "Super" Chalk Thing

Kamui, Russian Magic, Blue Diamond, Gold Star, Sang Lee: Does anyone have a notion about the actual value of premium and super premium chalks to one's play? I've been playing with Russian Magic for a few weeks; no miscues, but at my (low) playing level it's hard to quantify the return for a $4 or $25 piece of chalk over a $1 piece.
Your thoughts?

It's been discussed to death, and I don't think based on those threads that you'll get anything from this board. Those threads showcase the problems of misunderstanding the concepts of absolute vs relative, independence problems, and confusing localized performance gains with final results.

What the discussions always end up being is therefore the faulty logic that any performance gain is therefore worthwhile of any price. At best, you may find some anecdotal evidence from players who think it may have helped them in some way, though many of them are tainted one way or another due to the price concerns.

Gene if you are well versed as a player you already know that part of your pre-shot routine is to Chalk between shots. I was taught this more than 30 years ago when none of these chalks were even thought of, all we had back then was Masters and Triangle to my knowledge. So, I don't really see much advantage in not chalking as often, I mean when I am playing I am thinking between shots exactly what I want to do next.

I have few miscues, and those I have I think it is safe to say were due to a poor stroke more than the chalk I am currently using. I think in most cases people can and will find an excuse for poor performance, with that said I also think that in far to many cases, some players just can't see that the problem was thier fault in the first place.

I own a pool room so every day I here the regular suspects blame everything except their performance for a loss or a missed shot, however, this behavior also makes these same people vulnerable and they shark themselves. Over time they stop trying to figure out what they are doing wrong and why they are not improving, I mean that is kinda the way it go's with excuses, those who use them too often start believing thier own bull shit.

Then these new products come along, and I am not saying they are bad or dishonestly represented and these people try everything they can get their hands on to fix problems that are really part of their game. They buy all the new Tips, Chalk, Shafts, and so on, they also never find the solution to their problem.

I don't blame the manufactures, I am certain they believe that their products are better than what they are designed to replace, and it doesn't hurt anything anyway because a fool and his money is going to part no matter what it's just life!!!

if you have a decent stroke all chalk works equally well..

if you need "special chalk" to make any shot ....you were less probably than 50% to make it anyway..

regardless I believe the phrase "chalk is free" needs to be removed from the pool lexicon..

Chalk Matters

I disagree with the poster who commented that, if your stroke is decent, any chalk will do.

I have a decent stroke and I wish to state that chalk purchased at Walmart will result in miscues even when stroking the cue dead center. I've never in my life used a product that was worse for a given task. Walmart chalk is even worse (or better, depending on your persepctive) than passing a wet finger tip over your opponents cue tip.

If you want to give your friends some heartache, let them "share" a nice cube of Walmart chalk. No matter what game you're playing, you'll be almost sure to win!

Chicken, if you ever get up here to Washington State I have a guy for you to play. He doesn't use any chalk or for that matter a leather tip, he uses a Phenolic Tip. He can draw the cue ball length of the table, stop the ball, or anything else a normal person can do with a leather tip.

It may sound hard to believe and I may not have believed it myself, but seeing is believing, and yes I am from Missouri the show me state.:D

Take Care

if a miscue on a dead center CB shot is even possible for you... you don't have a decent stroke.. sorry .. hate to be the bearer of bad news.. but it is the truth..

you are the target market for $25.00 chalk

So the new assumption is that anyone who wants to use $25 chalk has a poor stroke or is a bad player looking for a magic cure?

I don't understand that logic.......

well if you really want to get down to grits ability to apply more spin..

you would need to PROVE that your chalk can hit farther out on the CB than the other guys chalk can..

now for those of us in reality.. the shape of your tip and it's diameter will both come into play...

my guess is that even if the claims of the miracle chalks are true you are still only talking about micrometers of distance at the very edge of the miscue limit..

and no one in their right mind is going to rely on miracle shots at the edge of possibility... much less those at the edge of their own ability...

and the edge of your ability to reliably spin the ball depends upon your stroke...

right??

Well, for most AZ'ers, when he referred to any chalk, he most likely meant Masters, Silver Cup, Triangle, etc... the stuff at most pool halls.

Yes, the cheap, chinese made crap from Walmart or other places will make you miscue. I was at a guys house for a poker game, and he had a pool table. Well, he had a brand of chalk I never heard of, and I could see it was not going on nicely, and the only shot I could shoot was dead center, no english, no draw and no follow. I brought chalk with me next time and he was thrilled to death to have a piece of my olive green Silver Cup. He thought he just "sucked" as to why he miscued so much !!!

Wonder how Willie mosconi could even do S*** on a Pool Table with out.

Super Chalk

Layered Tips

Plus Laminated Shafts????
?

I think it is BS, and that is bullsh..... Not Barry Szam. IMO it's for suckers, but if you feel it makes you happy .... do it. I'll be happy with masters or silver cup.

Well said.

A piece of chalk is worth what folks are willing to pay. I do agree however, that some are better than others (using some of the Chinese cheap crap will lead to many miscues...and has been my actual experience). If a particular chalk seems to give a particular player a psychological/physical edge, then it is up to them to determine if it is worth spending more/less money.
It is purely a personal decision. Just like tips, cues, shafts, and all of the other gear associated with playing pool, chalk is just another piece of equipment. If you like the $25 version or the $0.25 version it doesn't matter to me. Everyone is different, so I say use what works for you.

5 inch pockets....
just to help you along

so put your secret chalk on your miracle tip.. on to the end of your glued together scrap wood shaft...

and even after you erase all the marketing.. you are left with the same shitty stroke you started with..

so perhaps you should stop throwing money at every gimmick in the aisle of the 5 and dime.. and actually practice and perhaps solve the actual problem

which is your shitty stroke... but that would take time and effort

and chumps are willing to spend what ever it costs to avoid the WORK that will actually solve the problem..

no wonder your game is a joke..

I really hope that was a general post and not targeted to me in general. Mosconi was a hell of a player, but I dont think he could do it on the modern tables. They are much faster and much tighter than the old days.
