The WPBA Michigan City Thread

I'm loving these TV rounds. It's always good when Vivian is there. And, it's nice to see Jeanette back and someone new on TV. Congrats to Allison for fighting back and to Alice and XTP for making it as far as they did.

My 2 cents....

Jeanette played well, but really looked to struggle with her back during the last half of her last match vs. Pan. Besides that, her game looked pretty strong.

Allison was in cruise mode in her earlier match yesterday evening vs Jen Barretta. I sat on the other side of the room for the Corr-Fisher match, so I didn't pay particular attention to it until the last few racks when it was the last match being played.

Kim White was SO thrilled to advance to the TV rounds. She was saying she couldn't wait to call someone back home and tell them she wouldn't be home this afternoon/evening as was probably planned. All the other ladies were happy for her as well with Jeanette throwing in a "good for you, you deserve it." Although they are competitors, all the girls pull for one-another which is a great show of sportsmanship and their freindships off the table. Kim looks like she's "in the zone" at the table. Watching some of her play yesterday, she seems to be playing a very simple, solid game. It seems like she's running out with minimal "risk" or extra cueball movement. If she can ignore the "Allison" factor and play the way she played yesterday, she could very well knock Allison off.

I talked to Sarah Rousey last night. She was a bit bummed because she felt she could have won either match she lost. She said she knows she can chalk it all up to experience and learn from those type of matches. I told her that's a good way of looking at it and keep up the good work.

Other random thoughts/observations: Vivian seems to be in her comfortable dancing-singing-whistling mode: always entertaining. JChenn missed an 8-ball on an attempted thin-brush safety at hill-hill vs Kim White earlier in the day. Needless to say, she returned to "the chair" and couldn't bear to watch Kim run out the clinching 2 balls. Finally, for her size, the young Pan has quite a strong break...probably one of the hardest I saw yesterday. Nice seeing/talking with you RSB-Refugee.

Well, I've got to hit the shower and head back for the TV taping of the semi's and finals.

Great post. I can't wait to read your account of the TV rounds. Enjoy the matches!

Fading the "Allison Factor" is only part of the battle. Fading the "tv camera factor" is another part of the battle. ;)

Best of luck to her and all the ladies today.

Ragbug thanks for the great post. :)

Anyone think this format makes any sense? Perhaps it's best explained with a trivia question:

Question
What do Karen Corr, Gerda Hostatter, Ga Young Kim, Belinda Calhoun, Kelly Fisher, Jennifer Barretta, Pan Xiaoting, Helena Thornfeldt, Allison Fisher, Vivian Villareal, Kim White and Jeanette Lee have in common?

Answer
All twelve of them have exactly one loss at WPBA Michigan City. The tournament format in use has figured as prominently as the play in deciding which of the four will play on TV today.

I know lady luck will always be welcome in a women's event, but lady luck has had just a little too much influence for my taste at WPBA Michigan City.

As a fan of the WPBA, I have to say, I am not a fan of this format. I understand it is a way for them to get new faces on TV, however, it is unfair to the players. IMHO, if one player loses twice before getting the boot, all players should be entitled to two losses.

Why don't they just make the top 16 play with a ball and chain tied around one ankle if they want new faces? Going from a double to single format in midstream is unfair. Johnnyt:mad:

From merely a fan point of view, which is the only view I can have, I definitely agree with you. Regardless of reasoning, it outwardly appears simply unfair. You have a better chance of winning if you lose early on and sail through the loser bracket, than if you were to lose late in the winners bracket is how it appears. When I first noticed this format, I even questioned SJM, whom I highly respect the opinion of, as to it's validity.

Excellence is dominating. There are pros and cons to everything I realize, but I would think it would be fairer to all players to find a new face on tv because they fought there way to it using the old format. :D

Hi Rich R,

You better stay out of the women`s affairs otherwise it will backfire on you.:D

WPBA.com has reported that Vivian Villareal has beaten Jeanette Lee in a 7- 6 double hill affair to advance to the final.

sjm,

The more I think about this single elimination format becoming the norm format for ALL the WPBA events, the more I'm not agreeing with it. It was a novel format for the one event, but to start off with double elim and switch to single elim is just not right.

I didn't know they were going to make this the format for all the events.

Woo hoo, Vivian! Nice to see her in the finals. I would love to see her take this one. From what others have written here, she's playing well.

It would be a great story if Vivian were to win her first WPBA event since the WPBA Brunswick New York Classic in 1998. Perhaps today's the day. I wish her good luck.

Update

Hey everyone!

Live tournament update!

It is now 2-0 Kim White. Kim looks beautiful by the way. Full makeup and hair done!

Time eastern is 4:47pm.

Vivian lost her daughter when she was ranked #1 in the world. Since finding her again, a huge burden has been lifted and she is once again going to be free-stroking her way to the very top. My best wishes go out to her.

Kerry Hartsfield Impson and I were talking yesterday about this single elimination format. We don't really understand it, but it must have been voted on from the entire membership? Maybe the majority thought it might favor the weaker player, to get that one shot in a lifetime in.

I don't think it will ever change to an entire single elimination tournament as a lot of the players on the WPBA now are going to think twice before spending a couple thousand dollars to attend an event with only one shot at the money.

Now, 2-2. Kim got a bad roll and got corner hooked on the 9. She kicked at it and almost banked it in the side! 5:04pm. Kim is playing very well right now, doing well under the pressure.

this format is stupid...it punishes the players that get to the quarters with no losses...i mean the players who lose early on get a second chance but f you get to the quarters with no losses you dont get a second chance when actually you should get something for getting that far without a loss...whose bright idea was this why not revers it single elimination till the quarters then double after that

This is inaccurate. Vivian's daughter Nathalie was abducted in late l997. Vivian was last ranked #1 in early 1996. Since Allison Fisher gained the #1 ranking in mid-1996, only Karen Corr has ever managed to wrestle it away from her.

I couldn't be happier for Vivian that Nathalie was found last year, and wish her good luck in the final today.

It is now 3-3. Kim ran out after banking in a long one ball that Allison had left her.

Those Texans, who play a whole lot of one-pocket, sure can bank them. I'd call Kim's fellow Texan Vivian Villareal the best ever on the WPBA at bank shots.

PS Love ya, Tina. Thanks.
