thin/thick walled steel joints

What is the diferance in hit ,if any, between a thin walled and thick walled steel joint? My Pechauer has a very thick walled steel joint. Would less steel and more wood contact give the hit a softer feel?

This seems like the perfect question for the "Ask the Cuemaker" section.

My best guess would be is steel is harder than wood. More steel = harder hit. I also know the joint height has something to do with it as well. I have a Searing stainless steel half joint and Dennis explained the physics of how the half joint has less deflection.

I would think you are correct, because in the thin walled joints I have seen they are so thin that the metal would little effect on the hit. Also, some of the joints that appear first glance to be Steel are actually Aluminum. I suspect that do to the weight that an Aluminum joint would also give you a softer hit and less forward balance.

I had Keith do a 3/4" SS thin walled sleeved joint for me on my cue. His standard joint is a FF with Radial pin. I think it just 'crisps' the feel of the FF joint...not so hard as a full SS or thick walled SS sleeved. Just my experience.
