thinking of buying this table...with problems

So, I have been looking to buy a table for awhile. My room is not big enough to hold an 8' and I will need a short stick on the sides, but I just hate not hitting balls around. People are crazy when it comes to selling their tables on craigslist and the like. They want $1800 for a $500 used table. They are not much into listening to why they are crazy. Anyway, I came across this one and went out an looked. The table itself is ok. Rails are fine. But the legs are just all twisted and are a real mess. So, if I buy this table, can I take the legs apart and have new wood put over them? Keep in mind, I don't care about cosmetics. I just want to be able to hit balls around at night instead of watching the boob-tube or betting the horses on-line. But I don't want to take the legs off only to find out I can't put new wood around them....anyway, any knowledgeable opinion is appreciated.

I would say that you will definately need to build new legs and not "rewood" them as you suggest, those are flat out rotted. Brings into question if the frame is rotted and twisted as well. Moving it may be its demise. I wouldn't give him anything much for that thing, I would suggest to him that you will take it out of there for free if nobody buys it, really.

Actually I did do that already about two months ago. This is the wife selling her soon to be ex husbands pride and joy and she wants CASH! The term rewooded is kind of dumb, I should have said rebuilt. There is nothing wrong with the frame or anything I can see. The rails are fine. I thought they would have had to be replaced. It plays, for my purposes well. Actually, the wood on the legs is not rotted, they just warped and separated. There is a steel frame inside the leg. I am thinking, I can just take off the old wood and use the steel frames. But I am a bit of a putz with a hammer, so I wasn't sure if I could take off the old wood and put some new stuff on.

he's right, don't pay for this table. You should offer to haul it away for $150, ha ha

I doubt she will give it away.
Offer $100 cash money and take it away immediately.
She gets some $ and gets rid of the table.
I'm sure you can rig something for the legs.

CraigsList Table

I will give a little different opinion. I just spent the last month or two looking for a table... I am also in the Northeast. I found, literally, 100's of tables on Craigslist. Example, just on Long Island one week in March there were 66 tables listed. I looked at the Craigslists in MA, RI, CT and NY. It took some time but I found a good deal on a CG4. In the process there were many excellent tables... 7 and 8 footers asking between $300-$800. Maybe you might look a little more, spend a few hundred more and save yourself a major salvage project with a questionable outcome. Again, just seemed to be quite a bit out there. Good Luck, Vinny

Thanks guys. Right now on Craigslist there are almost 100 tables in Boston...take out the 9' tables, the mizeraks's, the 7's you have about 12. Most are posted "paid $3600...want just $2000: firm". Seems the 8' tables are mostly furniture type tables, bought by people that thought it was a good idea to get a home table. I wish I had room for a 9' table, I have seen some excellent deals. I saw a gc4 for $1200 recently....I haven't seen one commercial type table (Old Gandy or National, even one of those GC knockoffs)

If your handy with woodworking and have the tools to do the job I say buy it at a reduced price. I just picked up a 8 foot 3 piece slate table for $25 on craigslist that needed some repairs to the frame. After spending $30 on the wood it plays great.

I like the offer her $100 idea.

I would think if there's a steel insert, that the steel is what takes the weight and the wood is for aesthetic purposes. Which in my mind would mean the wood would be easily repaired/replaced. I am not a table mechanic and don't really know anything, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

By the way, I read your book years ago and really enjoyed it. You gonna write another?

If I'm not mistaken (like I was once, let's see......back in 1977) that table looks like a Brunswick Centurion or Century.....something along that line.

If it is, those are not bad playing tables and are solid as they came back then. The legs would be semi-easy to rebuild (or build new) and you could even modify them to accomodate leg levelers similar to the Crowns.

Then again, you could probably find something with less work. Just another thought.

This table is a Brunswick "Century". The legs are paricle board and there is no metal parts inside. Contact a Brunswick dealer. New legs may be available. Al

i would not even consider to put p.o.s bristol type legs on a pro 8 century with one inch slate. Also too short. richmond uses 3/4 unframed slate.

thanks for your input

I ended up passing on this table. I took your advice....thanks for your help guys....
