Yes. 14k Black Hills gold, I think. I believe there is another one on the other side. He's done something similar on like 2-3 other cues. Keith is a pretty crafty guy. He always tells me, "Where there's a will, there's a way." No joke on this. I can imagine cutting that pocket by hand!

In this case, it depends entirely upon what gold costs at the time Keith purchases. I think (and I could be completely wrong) that the rings and stuff were made from gold as well. I think about 4-5oz of 14k gold would be dependent on cost here:

figuring just 4.5oz of 14k gold (127.5 grams) there is almost $3k in just gold in this particular cue. I believe each eagle was like 3/4oz (there's one on the other side.)
More to your point I'm assuming you meant to knife in the pocket like this, it would depend on how hard the pocket shape is. I'd have to ask Keith for sure, it's been a long time since he did this, but my guess is what ever he figures his shop rate to be per hour. I wish I had a better answer for you, but I don't at this time.
Either way, I'm sure he had some choice words in use while making this one!

Just curious... what are we looking at? Is the pocket shaped like the bird or is the bird cast into something oval-shaped (like a resin) and then inlaid into the cue?

That inlay was done in 2 D pocketing by hand and at that width on the Y axis I would think it is at least .240 deep unless Keith curved the inlay to the radius. I guess with golfd being so malleable curving it sounds plausible and would cut down on waste. My guess is that he got the inlay off of a gold eagle coin. At any rate, however he did it, that is in Thomas Wayne's skill set world for using a knife by hand. True artistic work.

What a lot of people don't realize is Keith was doing this kind of high end work some 20+ years ago. Back then, he was doing cleaner and nicer work than a lot of the now well-known CMs. He 'da man !! :thumbup:

The pocket is cut to fit the eagle i think, and then filled with resin i believe. Just insane!!! I believe he curved it a bit, and this was done in like 1991 I think. I've only known Keith for like 5 years, and he has really only been back building full time for like 9-12 months or so, since I met him. He's a very modest man, and doesn't like to tell me about all the cool shit he use to build. I kind of get a laugh out of people telling me that he is a "no name" cue maker...

He likes to remind me that he was building cues "When I was an itch in my daddy's pants..." LOL!!!! He turned the big 50 this year. Definitely one of the best people/ friends I've ever met!
My friend Martin Gauger in Germany became a Keith Kues dealer after I lent him my catalogs back in the 90s. I held one of these gold eagle inlaid cues back then. Pretty sporty.
