This is why I play pool...and why YOU should to...

There are two things that I have always been able to do to clear my head.......to clear the mechanisim......pool and running (no running anymore tho sadly)
For all its simpleness it has extravagent depth to the game. Finding your game can equal to finding your self.....not that pool is necessarily who we are....just the game is so unique on a personal level b/c its always only about what you can do, what you did do, not anyone elses doing.
B/c you can control your own destiny on the table, your equal with all men untill proven other wise.......
we judge it often tho the game never judges us.....
its got flair, its own music. You can have style or no style at all. There are just so many facets......
game is/can just be an amazing addition to peoples lives.
Hell one of my friends I took to school and helped him progess his game very much. I was always very proud that he took in everything and developed into the young player he is now. But he was always not such a confident person inside himself........kid was never every cocky, and the boy plays great and still no cockiness, he will just get up there beat you 6 to 0 and think nothing of it...very unassuming person. As I watched his game develop I watched his personal confidence and self worth grow.
Kid put the time in, worked hard, kicked a** and showed him that he much to be confident about and that all he has to do is apply himself and try something and he can attain success......
Pool is amazing not b/c of its games but for all the little nuances that apply to life directly.

This is the ENTIRE reason that I play the game today. I don't worry about winning, status, ability, or anything else for that matter. Also, this is only a recent development with me. It is rather yin/yang-esque. In order to win, you must not care about winning. I just savor each shot and take great pleasure watching the outcome. Each motion is the end in itself. The result is that I am now playing and beating people whom I struggled against for years. The funny thing is that I really don't care. Don't get me wrong, winning is nice and all. But I forget about it once it is done. Same as losses. I don't lose much sleep over it either way.
There is one more reason that I play now. It is my way of relaxing. This has the added benefit of enabling calm, steady play when it matters. I played in a tourney last weekend for the first time in years and played my game just as well as if I was playing on my home table. It was great fun.

Good point, abie10. Of all the answers people give for playing i.e "for the money," "for the competition," "for the challenge," "for the recognition" etc., I wonder how many can remember that they were first attracted to the game simply because it gave them pleasure?

The Reason I play Pool
The reasons I play pool are simple and complex at the same time .
Pool was the first game/sport that i came accross that i was very good at or better to say i had affinity for.
For me each rack and learning new shots was a new challenge , to feel a really great hitting cue in your hands and that unique feeling you get when you hit a ball really well, man its magical, a feeling i never tire of
To walk into a new pool room and get on a table and you feel the other players sizing you up , and you are doing the same. Even if action is the furthest thing from your mind
Those too rare instances when you match up with a really great player who like you was there just for some practice and you wind up playing for hours both playing your all just for the pure competition.
And then spending hours swapping war stories and wondering how it was you never locked up before now
Walking in the room and seeing those exceptional players who can make a cue ball seem alive, no other sport has as many unsung heros and for each known player on the tours there are 10 others who's names are widely unknown outside some very small pool circles but very may be some of the best to play to game
Any player can walk into an unknown pool room in a strange city and find familiarity what other game can be so serene and so intense and loved by both the loner and the extremely social
To me Pool feels like home

"Pleasures of Small Motions" is a great book. It's a pleasure to read and you will probably recognize yourself in it's pages.
