This Old House (Cue).

A while back a friend of mine paid 2$ for a whole bunch of old house cues. He gave them to me because I make cues. Most of the cues were cheap asian junk made of Ramin wood and I put them out on the curb for the trashman. Mixed in were a couple normal type house cues but there was one old cue that was a little different. It was an old Dufferin that was way oversize and weighed a ton. The cue looked terrible, it looked like the other cues had ganged up on it and given it a good beating. It had a really thick, yellowed finish with big chips missing. It looked so sad that I decided to rescue it.

I cut the cue in half and threw out the shaft because it was warped and I figured I would turn the butt down to normal dimensions and see what it looked like. The wood wasn't pretty but it had some character and the points were pretty even for a house cue so I continued with the makeover. I made a new shaft, added an Atlas 3/8-10 self-aligning, center-drilled pin, linen phenolic ferrule, Tiger Everest tip, black and mahogany linen phenolic joint collars. To dress the old gal up a little I added a curly maple butt sleeve with a couple of maple and bloodwood slotted rings that I had sitting around from another project and a mahogany linen butt cap. A nice epoxy finish to top it all off, wet sanded to 2000, buffed and waxed and the old cue is back in the game as a sneaky pete with personality. It hits great and that old beaten up piece of wood is distinctive, it's been around the block a time or two and it's back for more.

Wow did that one come off! The buttsleeve and rings really look great on her, well done.

The gentleman who originally gave me the old cue is now the proud owner of the reincarnated cue. He used the cue to whip me in a game of 14.1 and then it went home with him; I guess cues don't feel any loyalty towards their makers (or saviors in this case) :) Maybe I'll run across another big, old, baseball bat sized Dufferin again someday and save it from the firewood pile.

Very nice job, Ken.

I'm going to have to get you to work on something for me.

Maybe that old Davis blank that has been sitting in that shop in Racine for a couple of years.
