This shot comes up so often

The shot posted is just another shot that separates the men from the boys. This is one type of rail hop shot. Knowing or an educated guess on how rails react is the key. Any good player should have a decent idea.

My first episode was 60's and I have used variations since. One time for the cash in a hill game and made it. In this case the o/b was about center between long rails. I knew I'd hit it and luck was on my side, it never bobbled. It's a good shot to know. Some may think it a little far fetched but a hand full of elevated shots into the rail is good to know to.

I'm wondering how you're going to hit that hard enough to get over the ball, pocket the one across table and then somehow miraculously stop before the second diamond for perfect position on the 2 in the side.

Miraculously? No, the topspin becomes reverse spin after hitting the rail, and acts like draw. It happened, regardless.

Not necessarily harder, more elevation works wonders with less speed.

...and in case you are really lucky the same shot could turn out like this like it did to me.I wanted to play it just like you diagramed it. It was on a trickshotshow of a pool supply shop and it turned out like this (1:50 on the video):D
