Thoughts on coming back from an injury?

I've been out of the game for quite a while now. I'd say the last time I was in playing condition was two years ago. Early last year I had my shoulder dislocated, and I am now looking to get back into the game.

How long do you think it takes to get back in the game and back to playing condition? What are some ideas you think will help me along my way?

Thanks in advance! 😀

Great opportunity to start over without any muscle memory .....sans any bad shooting habits.......
get to Scott Lee's school and perfect your stroke efficiency and execution......great way to start
out on with improved mechanics.......get a new edge to your game.........just my 2 cents.

It really depends on your foundation. I was out for a year and a half due to work and a torn tendon in my stroking arm. I'm two months in and I'm on the verge of surpassing the old me.

Luckily the stars have aligned for me where I have more time this month, a new hall opened which is open 24 hours on the weekends and I'm over the tremors I was having in my stroking arm from the injury.

If I didn't have the foundation I have from seeing an instructor I don't know where I would be

The biggest thing that I took away from the injury and getting back to playing is that you are definitely more deliberate, I couldn't move as quickly and didn't have full range of motion so you really had to plan your position to someplace you could actually reach. 6 months after the spinal cord injury I won the biggest tournament ever in my career, one of the Florida Pro Tour stops. Don't rush into trying to be 100% again but work around your injury and take your time, it's a journey not a destination.

I have stopped playing 2 or 3 times over the years. I never had an injury or anything like that but every time I quit it seems like it takes me a long time to get back to where I was. However I suppose that it would be different for everyone. Just don't get your expectations to high, just play and enjoy the game and it will come.

I agree 100% with this. Johnnyt

Long road

Yeah I played a little yesterday and today, but I keep feeling like my control over my muscles is lacking and thus I struggle to achieve so rather easy shots. Also my cuts/angles keep being a bit off; however, that doesn't concern me much since I know that will come back fairly quick. I still have a wicked bank shot though not as good as before.

My biggest fear/concern has to do with my break. I am having to learn how to break differently than before the injury. I can't smash the rack like before with speed and great force/power..... 😔 I'm keeping at it. Thanks everyone who posts it really helps to hear the experiences y'all have had with a long break or injury. (Mines is both technically)

Hey Sensei :)

The very first and most important point: You have to love what you do- and it seems, that you love to play pool. So this point you can put aside :)

No matter what skill-level you had before- see it as a chance buddy- a chance to start again with sth you LOVE- also you have the chance to maybe start to work automatically on issues you maybe had before?

It s always a point of view that changes things- and so it is here.
An injury is always not a nice thing-
But how we say so often? It s not important to get a los, do fall down- it just counts that you stand up again....and that you learn from it.

All the best and enjoy your table time :-)

Good luck with your recovery and the main thing I could advise it to try not to do too much too quickly, it's easier to hurt yourself or re-injure yourself thank you think. The road is long and arduous but can be made longer if you try to take shortcuts, try not to get too frustrated and rush into things.

League

So I had never played in a league for pool before, but I have decided to do just that this time around. I'm looking forward to it and am assuming it will help me get back in the game solidly. I know from playing darts that league makes you work and keeps you improving, so I am hoping for the same results with pool.

What are your thoughts on leagues? Anything I should know?

I had hip surgery by one of the nation's best in LA. i kept peppering him with questions about when i could work out again. His answer was always the same "be sensible, ease back in"

You do the common sense thing.
