COM was based on the “dump” which destroyed gambling in pool. Nice.

Should have never been made

Me too. After finally reading TCOM,I couldn't help but wonder if Scorsese had done right by the book.

Mine is one old book since it’s a reprint by Dell printing in July 1961.
I tried getting a copy of the original by Harper and Bros. but couldn’t
justify spending $500 and that was a very long time ago. Bennington’s
was the centerpiece pool hall. Maybe it was switched to Ames in the
film because Jackie Gleason was filming his TV show in the CBS studios
on W. 57th St. Ames was located in Times Square on W. 44th St. & 7th Ave.
Sadly, I passed on a hard cover first edition because of water marks on the jacket. Should have bought it anyway!!

I worked a pool room here, the owner was closing and asked me if I wanted the wall poster/ads. 1 was a movie poster for the Hustler, IN SPANISH! The other one was the "Oldies" Tournament signed by all the players. The year Wimpy Lassiter swept all the events. We call that regret!

As I recall TCOM book is completely different than the movie and TH movie somewhat different than the book. Both books are better than the movies and are must reads for everyone on this forum.

I always thought that they didn't think Newman could carry a movie any more so they had to get a young star involved. Which meant completely rewriting the story, since the original story had no such character. To its detriment. I'd love to see a remake of the actual story from the book. Which raises the question of who should play Fast Eddie. You'd need someone who is or could play a 60 year old character. I'm thinking maybe Kevin Costner.

My thoughts exactly! I saw the COM when it came out. But reading the book amazed me,I'd love to see it like Tevish meant it to be!
Would have been great, Gleason was still alive and could have done the Fats parts at the beginning of the book/movie. He and Newman were fantastic in the Hustler.

Anybody seen the Netflix limited series "The Queens Gambit?"
That was written by Tevis too.
Anyhow I have read both books and they were great.
I have seen The Hustler and TCOM many many times.
They are still the best pool movies out there.
The Hustler outshines all of the other pool movies by far in every aspect of the game and in life.
The Hustler movie is just on an entirely different level.

Someone mentioned that both movies spurred a pool craze which they did.
My son is building a house and the basement is finished for a poolroom.
It was a priority for my son with 10 foot ceiling in the finished basement and
he just ordered a new 9 foot Diamond as he is about month away from settlement.
He ordered it from a dealer/mechanic out of Maryland who is incredibly busy as I believe all mechanics are right now.
This dealer/mechanic is sure that we are currently going through another pool Renaissance
and he has been in the business for a couple of decades.
Queen's Gambit is great. Female chess player as Fast Eddy.

Remake of a great movie always fall short of the mark. That’s why Gone With The Wind has never been attempted or The Ten Commandments, Inherit The Wind, To Kill A Mockingbird, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, On The Waterfront, The Godfather, Bridge On The River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, etc. The movie list is truly longer than one might otherwise imagine go unchallenged.

There are some films that are meant to stand alone as a creative work of art to be appreciated and applauded
over the years by audiences born generations after it was made. This isn’t an action movie like Top Gun’s sequel out
now where Maverick returns and the storyline uses spectacular aerial stunts and computer enhanced scenes. This is
about a game that is today appreciated less for what it is and more for the venue where it’s played. That is why APA, BCA & other leagues flourish. Those aren’t reflective of pool halls, especially back in the 60’s. A remake isn’t a good idea.

Both books were good reads.
I enjoyed both movies as well, which needed some changes from the books to work as a movie for the masses.

With the surge of sequels from old classic movies of late and loads more planned, I think it has been enough of a gap from The Color of Money to make a third sequel.
Tom Cruise is in the mood of late, Top Gun Maverick was epic!

This time he plays the role of the older, seasoned player and mentor.
A nod to Fast Eddie, maybe we find out if he beat Vince... Certainly a back story for how Eddie died, would be nice.
No book to base it from, but that doesn't matter.
The Hustling side of pool should play a part, but as pool is trying its best to get more professional in the real World, maybe the third movie should have a story that is based on the cleaner side of the game.
Tournament based, League based with big money attached.
A story that inspires more, and like the older movies it might help create more interest in the game but this time attracts bigger and better sponsors.

I agree totally! The post is for people on here who haven't read the book. I saw the movie first picked up the book much later. If only.....

I thought TCOM book was a bland story. Not enough pool, gambling, adversity, hustling, etc. Anyone who hasn’t read the book would be shocked at how much of the book is Fast Eddie trying to help a girl purchase folk art and quilts to stock an antique shop. I’m squarely in the camp that the movie did the right thing with ignoring that entire plot and writing it’s own script.

I'm in the minority...TCOM book was a well written book, kind of a redemption tale--although it really doesn't have much happiness in it, but not really a movie a pool aficionado would like...TCOM movie was actually a better story that complimented the Hustler much better than any movie based on the book. Both movies made pool a centerpiece to a tragic fall from grace and (sort of) redemption...both books were really focused on pathos and tragedy, with pool as a backdrop...and TCOM (book) has very little actual pool in it.

I think we could use a third installment. Used car dealership owner Vincent Lauria is recruited by a European betting firm tycoon to coach a team of U.S. tournament players for a world championship team exhibition. They don't get along, they know it all, yada-yada...Vincent drags them off the Philippines to learn what nerve is, they gamble and get their brains beat in all over, culminating in some lessons in grinding from a legend or two (just think of the cameo possibilities!), find their nerve, and emerge as a team...

I tried to research the first {dump} in pool , never came up with a definitive date but probably about 3 hours after the game was invented. There was a pool figure back in the later 1800s , known as Dump Rhines lol. I'm going to venture out on a limb, and guess he was an aficionado.
