The ball hasn't really started rolling on this yet. Last yr once the money started being collected, the people that donated money were the ones that got to vote. :)

Time to be controversial.

This is for regular, not occasional posters. For example, I'm sure Nine Ball (Josh Hilliard) is a fine man and a fine player, but he has 34 posts in 2 1/2 years since joining AZB. It's no secret that SouthDakotaKid (Shane Van Boening) is a great player, but with just 39 posts since joining the forum, he also doesn't qualify as a regular in these parts. Earl Strickland has 16 posts -- if we wish to find the best player among those whose participation on this forum is marginal, maybe we should send a six time winner of the event as our representative....

Then again, maybe we should stop for a moment and reconsider what sending an AZBer to the US Open is all about. Rude Dog and Blackballed were superb choices in the past two years. Each has playing credentials and each has over 1,000 posts on this forum and, therefore, an established track record of sharing their experiences over the pool table with other posters.

I feel quite certain that all those being suggested as our representative are fine people and fine players, but I just don't see why we'd send anyone other than a regular contributor to this forum.

I'm delighted to see that the two candidates that seem to be garnering the most support, Jimmy M and Tanner Pruess, are regular posters on this forum.

I'm deeply sorry if I've offended anyone, and did not mean to single out anybody in trying to make my point, but I hope my views have been made clear.

Loud & clear.... and right on the mark. I always understood it to be the forum supporting a forum member. I can appreciate how people that mostly lurk might feel as a part of the group because they're familiar with the regular posting group. The problem is that the regular posting group is not familiar with them. ;)

I couldn't agree more sjm, I'd rather send someone that has made a signifigant contribution to the forum than someone that posts once a week. I'm sure Shane and Josh are fantastic players, their track records prove their playing ability, but I'd rather see a forum regular get the nod kind of like a reward for forum participation.

Jimmy M and Tanner have posted regularly for quite some time and I think they would be excellent representatives for AZ at the Open.

Mike said he will run it this year again. Thanks again Mike!
He said sometime this week he will make a new thread with the nominees and start taking the donations.

Tanner,

You have not only participated in the forum, posted a lot of valuable info, and posted your brief bio and achievement, you have also worked hard behind the scene to get Mike to accept the money so this thing can actually take off. Kudos to you.

You have more organizational skill than a lot of adults(may be myself included...:) )

I agree with SJM's opinion that we should send a regular, and I also think we should put our vote to the person who has made an effort to be nominated and voted, because it shows me how much that person wants to really go to the Open.

Besides, I must admit I am ignorant of the achievement of even some regulars here such as Jimmy. I have no doubt he is a great player, but I am sure a lot of people here would still like to know a bit about him. If he really wants to go, perhaps he could kindly consider take a bit of his time to tell us a bit about himself. I would love that, if it is possible.

If Tanner gets elected to go, I think this may change Tanner's life, that he might actually consider becoming a professional player. Especially if he manages to win some matches and really know how he plays compared to the best in the US.

Good job in getting Mike to take the money and run this again. Tanner.

Thank you, Mike.

Richard

I don't know what all to write, but if anyone is really interested, you can check out my MySpace page. I just created it today so there isn't much there yet but I'll be updating it regularly. http://www.myspace.com/nottommy

I'm finally one of those nerds with a blog.

I'm not sure. I think it means you're allowed to add comments to my page now? Hah! I've never actually used MySpace, but one of the people at work is hooked on browsing other people's profiles and she's always sending me links to them. I have no idea why either.

I would just like to personally thank Mike for setting this up, I'm sure he's quite busy and for him to take time out of his schedule to set this up is much appreciated.

So......THANKS MIKE:)

As much as I would like to possibly go this year I think I will try to go the following year.. if I get voted. My parents think I should also wait until the next year. It takes a lot of money for a person to go from South Dakota to Virginia and I have to do it with a parent. It will take close to $3000. A few things will be better if I go next year. I will probably go to Randy G's pool school in August. Hopefully that will help my game and make me more consistent. I can save up money during all that time. I can get some more time put in on 9-foot pool tables.

Thanks for the support!!!

I think you're going to have plenty of opportunities in the future to go, with or without our help. Keep practicing, keep your grades up, and never give up the dream. Peace, John.

Hopefully Mike can find time to post up a thread to vote.
Now that I am out... Vote For Jimmy M. ! ;)

Sorry to learn you can't make it this year, Tanner, but I hereby nominate you for the 2007 AZB Representative. We'lll get you there one of these days, Tanner.

As for the voting, there is no voting thread. Voting is restricted to those who contribute $25 or more, with the procedure being to send money through paypal, and subsequently send a PM to Mike to cast your vote, which will not be made public.

Thanks for next year's nomination. ;) I meant to say the thread where Mike lists the nominees and posted how much money had been donated every couple days.

Don't worry about it Tanner, you have many years ahead of you to attend the open and your gonna only become a better player with time and experience. Also there are many other players who have been nominated that are also deserving of an opportunity to play, I guess that's why I couldn't figure out who I wanted to vote for. If you do indeed choose to go next year you'll have my vote for sure my friend.

I think Jimmy M. is a little shy about writing about himself here in the forum so if he or anyone else doesn't mind, I'll do it for him.
I've known Jimmy since about 1988, from our days at Hard Times. Since that time, his game has done a 180 degree turn around. Granted, he was just a young kid back then, practicing many hours, small gambling sessions in between, but for the most part, he was just trying to survive the elements of the shark infested waters that Hard Times was all about.
I don't think anyone thought that he would become the player he is today. Not that he didn't have the talent to do it, because obviously he did. But I think it was over looked that he was just a kid then. His game didn't jump out at you for any reason. He wasn't a world beater. He wasn't in action all the time. But he practiced. And practiced. And practiced.
Just this past weekend he was involved in a challenge match that he put up for anyone that lives in Arizona. 10 ball, 14 ahead, for a decent amount of change. Jimmy lost the first set. After a bit of negotiating, they played another set, this time 10 ahead. Jimmy was stuck another 7 games but fought back and won the set. So, he not only has the game, he has the heart to overcome adversity and get the money. (I know, sounds corny)
Anyway, Jimmy may come on here and say I'm a dork for writing all of this about him but.................I've been called worse.:D
No mystery in who gets my vote now. Peace, John.

It was originally an 8-ahead but my opponent wanted to play 2 7-aheads. I thought this was a really long set, but I decided to play it anyway. When the day came, he asked me to change the set again, but I was already expecting a real long session, so I decided to just keep it the way it was. It's true. I played worse than I thought I was capable of playing and my opponent made me pay for it. He stuck me 14 games in about 5 1/2 hours. So we raised the bet and played a 10-ahead. At one point, he had me stuck 7 more games in the 10-ahead. We had to quit at 4:00AM because the bar (there's a 9' Diamond in the bar) was closing. We knew when we started that we'd have to quit at 4:00 and resume the next day if it wasn't over yet. 4:00 rolled around and I was stuck 4 games. We resumed the next day at 3:00PM and I came back and won the set.

P.S. John <-- What a dork.
