Thread mill question

Coos Cues
I have finally perfected the live threading jig that I designed and built for use with my Hightower deluxe lathe but I need a new thread mill. The jig works perfectly but the thread mill I have is a bit dull.

I see the micro100 tm-250-16 but it's thread pitch range is listed as 14-48 threads per inch. But I also want to live thread my shafts @ 10 threads per inch. Will this work for that thread pitch in wood? Or will it not cut deep enough? Is that just listed for metal? With a .308 minor modified pin it seems like it should cut the threads just fine unless I'm missing something.

Thanks,

JC

For joint screw installation, it won't reach the bottom threads as the neck length is only 1".
I get mine re-ground so I can go 1.875" deep.

For shafts, you can use it some .0303 deep then follow with a tap to clean the bottom of the threads.

You might as well get a 5/16 reamer ground to .308.

Your tap probably has a .295" pilot. Keep the hole at the size when you live thread, follow with a tap then ream it to .308".

Btw, scrap wood is free. Do some mock-up. :D

Here's one to get and save some $.

You can have the one you have sharpened.

Good point but the one I have has more trouble than that. It's too fat at the neck and too short so I figured I'd just start over. It came with a router I bought from Forney.

Thanks for all the pointers Joey.

Harvey tools has one with a 1.75 inch 1/8" neck and 3 inches overall for 65 bucks. That's deep enough for what I'm doing without mods. It's not like we have anyone here that can do that locally.

Right you are. Scrap wood makes the best sawdust:)

I have contacted Harvey tools, they could do a custom order for a long neck 10TPI thread mill.
I have to order atleast 3, the price is $197/each.
I have the specs if any one is interested.

Thread mill

I recently had three Carbide Thread Mills made using the dimensions of the thread Mill drawing Bob provides on his website. I'm not in the business to sell tools but I had to buy three to have online carbide make them. I had them ZrN coated. I will take $130 shipped and I will sell two.
