Thread Titles

I'm not missing your point, but I think you might be missing mine because the search feature doesn't filter much if you are not searching titles only. If you search the entire posts for "Kamui chalk" you will get results such as...

"I just tried the Kamui black hard tip and I like it very much. It holds chalk well..."

naw I get your point, I just wanted to add my own gripe that was on a slightly different tangent. The search has always sucked like a black hole, so even if someone takes the time to use it, it doesn't help much. You can't specify stuff like kamui AND chalk (both words must be present, but not necessarily together) or Predator Air (three letter words get excluded unless they're part of a quoted phrase).

I don't use title-search, a lot of good stuff gets posted as a tangent to an otherwise unrelated topic (for example, the return of danny medina turned into discussion of earl's million dollar 10-pack). But I'm all in favor of making titles more descriptive so I know right away if the thread's gonna be dull.

A better title for this thread would have been "Thread Titles Insufficiently Informative." I had to open this thread to find out to what it pertained.

Seriously, though, the point is well taken. Useless thread titles are a big problem on this forum, and there are, seemingly, more and more of them.

SJM is just a world or 2 more more tactful than I...

Fatz...Excellent point!

I would like to suggest that some people could be more descriptive about the topic of their new threads. When typing in the title, please try to be descriptive. Titles like "impressed" and "question" are not very helpful.

For example, let's say I want to know what people are saying about Kamui chalk. I would use the Advanced Search and type in the key words "Kamui" and "chalk". I would then select the choice of "Search Titles Only". Using "Search Entire Posts" would create too many erroneous results. But if people are not typing in descriptive titles, then the topic may not be "found" using "Search Titles Only", limiting this feature's usefulness.

note: the Kamui chalk thing is just an example.

Thank you.

OK, now I'm confused. I thought you could not do quoted phrases. I've been using google to search AZ for quoted phrases and three letter words.

sigh...

Stu...That is seriously funny! LMAO ...even though both points are well taken! Unfortunately, making the thread title more self-explainatory won't help reduce the number of, imo, useless threads out there every day...like, "Which pro player's cue is the straightest?" (this being but a microscopic example). They're almost as annoying as a title too "insufficient"! LOL

Interesting thread; I think you might be thinking that people should be or want to be thoughtful, organized, thorough and attentive to what they are doing. I am; but I am about 50% of the population. From my experience you can't get the other half to do this.

One big drawback in getting too descriptive and specific in the title is that you have "the lazy group" those people that either just read the title and then answer, or read the title "skim" the rest of the post and answer. These folks read posts upside down, make backwards assumptions and otherwise misread posts all the time. IMHO you would encourage this behavior, I look to curtail it.

The title is an "advertisement"; people are going to place those ads how they see fit, if you think you can make a lasting impact on how people approach that and make it more thoughtful, organized, thorough and people paying special attention to what they are doing with it; you have way more faith in people than I.

You're probably right. Further, the people who post things like "cue for sale" and "question" are probably not even reading this thread. I should have titled it "gripe".

sigh...

Quotes do actually work now. I don't think they always did. For example if you want to find every post lock'n'load has ever made, you can just use the quoted phrase "world's pool hall" :P
