Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour in Sterling, VA Update

Today is the second day of the Open event, and the Ladies tourney begins at 11:00 a.m. Twelve players remain in the Open event. The lovely Timberly, Beetle from Potomac, I think EggMcDogit, Black-Balled, and Keith were some of the AzBilliards' members in attendance, as well as NineballCC, Alinco, and Prinsnick, who keep this tour running strong.

There were 47 players who showed up to compete in the FIRST Tiger/Planet Pool 9-Ball tournament, with Tiger as the new title sponsor. The turnout was somewhat disappointing, considering most of the PP 9-Ball tournaments at this pool room attracted 100-plus players in the past, but the level of play was a plus. Shawn Putnam, also sponsored by Tiger, came to First Break and gave it his all, but he ran into a little trouble when he met Delaware Gentleman Player Kevin West. Racing to 9, the match seasawed back and forth, but when the dust settled, Shawn came out on top after a very hard-fought battle.

Two ladies decided to get in the Open event: Veteran WPBA Pro Sueyen Rhee and Young Gun Pam Treadway, the new kid on the block. Ironically, when the charts were drawn, wouldn't you know it, these two gals had to play each other the very first match.

Pam came out of the gate like a front-runner and kept Sueyen benched, 4-zip, racing to 9. Sueyen never gave up and managed to get on the board after a miss by Pam, 4 to 1. Then things began to take a turn when Sueyen dug in her heels and let Pam know she was there. After a session of brilliant play, the score came to the infamous hill-hill. The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife, and all eyes were on the two ladies. Pam was running out for the win and got out of line, resulting in a miss, handing Sueyan the victory. This was a very thrilling set for the railbird sweaters.

Black-Balled advanced the charts, but faced a determined UPA Touring Pro Mike Davis who sent AzBilliards' Walter Kochs to the B side. Ryan McCreesh will make a return appearance from the A side of the charts. He's playing with a new Predator cue stick and has boasted to all that this is a weapon of mass destruction. He said he's going to win the whole tournament and is taking no prisoners, but there's a few combatants who may give Ryan a run for his money. [Hi, Ryan! :D ;) ]

Keith McCready lost a hill-hill to a player from Virginia Beach, who's originally from Tampa. He was the dark horse of the tournament, and everybody was whispering, wondering who this fellow was. We're heading on over to Sterling at high noon for a showdown. Keith is in the losers' bracket and hopes to bring his "A" game with him. Pookie also competed in the tournament, but I can't remember where he is on the charts.

Josh Dickerson of Richmond, VA came to First Break to play, and he passed out fliers for the upcoming Virginia State 9-Ball Championship to be held at The Playing Field in Richmond, VA which will be held on July 23-24, 2005. He is responsible for bringing back this Virginia title tournament after a lengthy absence. The first Virginia State 9-Ball Championship under his direction occurred last year, which was won by Chris Lauer of Fredericksburg, VA. Many players in this area expressed interest and are planning on attending.

One of the highlights of the tournament for me was seeing Todd of Parrot Cues, who also happens to be a sponsor of the Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour, knock down quite a few players on the A side of the charts. He also was providing cue maintenance and repair on site between matches, which was definitely appreciated by all the players. Young Gun Brandon Shuff has been playing with a sliver of a tip for months now, and he FINALLY got a new tip, thanks to Todd being there.

Well, that's a snippet of the festivities. The winner is anybody's guess. Stay tuned...

That is interesting. There is a q'er in Jersey that started yesturday. It ususally doesn't affect the ladies 9 ball too much as those that were knocked out of the q'er on Sat usually play at PP on Sun. However, both Pam and Sueyen are elidgable for the q-spot, so I would have never figured them for Sat play at PP.

BTW, thanx for the updates JAM.

Hi Landshark,

I don't think Sueyen would be eligible for the qualifier spot. I think she has to let the WPBA know in advance whethere she is accepting a guaranteed spot/invite that she has already. If she tells the WPBA that she doesn't want the spot, then she is eligible to win the qualifier spot for that same WPBA event. She can't have it both ways (have an automatic invite and then try to win a qualifier for it, too). I am almost 100% sure that this is how it works, but I am sure Sueyen can explain it better!

LMAO! I didn't even think about her already having a spot at that tourney. My bad. IMO, Pam should have gone though....especially if being Pro is one of her aspirations. I guess she'll have her taste of it all in a few weeks in FL. Good luck to her.

BTW, did you play this weekend? PP or JPNEWT? I missed them both. :(

Putnam Snatches Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour Win Once More!

In an extended race in the finals, going to 11, Shawn Putnam and Mike Davis gave a brilliant exhibition of 9-ball at its finest. Shawn came out strong in the beginning, and Davis could only sit back and watch the show. Davis did make some brilliant safety plays during the set, which gave him several opportunities to score. However, it was all Putnam in the end who pocketed a cool dime for his efforts, with Davis receiving $600 for second place. Ryan came in third, and Keith finished fourth.

When we left, Pam Treadway was in the hot seat for the ladies event, with two other players battling it out, hoping to get the opportunity to meet Pam in the finals.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it! :p

Thanks for the update JAM. I suspected those four would wind up at the top of the open and Pam would be at the top of the ladies!

So i guess JAMS narrative of the Treadway/Rhee first round match was in error?

Nostroke...JAM's narrative was for the OPEN event. Andy posted about the WOMEN'S event. PP has a 2 day open Sat thru Sun and a one day women's (Sun only). Pam obviously played in both.

JAM was referring to the Treadway Vs. Rhee match in the Saturday OPEN event (not the Women's event which was on Sunday). EDIT--Landshark beat me to the punch, see above....

It is kind of confusing, considering there are TWO tournaments which occurred this past weekend, which is customary for the Tiger/Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour. The Open is a 2-day event, and anybody can get in. The Ladies tournament is restricted to women players and is a 1-day event, occurring on Sunday.

In the Open event this past weekend, there were two lady players who got in, Pam Treadway and Sueyen Rhee. Out of 47 players on the roster, these two ladies, the only two in the Open event, drew each other the very first round.

In the Ladies tournament which occurred on Sunday, Pam Treadway ended up winning the whole shebang. Sueyen Rhee did not compete in the ladies event.

One lady player named Teresa (I think) told me on Sunday that she had played in the JPNEWT event in Parsippany, NJ at Comet Billiards the day before on Saturday. She stated that 14 players showed up to compete in a qualifier for an upcoming Midwest tourney. After she got knocked out by a player from Missouri, she headed back to Virginia to play in Sunday's Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour ladies event.

Congratulations to Wendy Safford for coming in fourth at yesterday's tourney. Wendy practices pool every single day and attends many local and regional tournaments. She was beaming with pride yesterday at First Break in Sterilng, VA, as this was her BEST finish to date. It is nice to see a player reap the rewards after putting in so many hours to develop their game.

It is regional tours like the Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour where aspiring players can fulfill their pool dreams, if just given the chance.

JAM,

Anyone have a guess as to why the turnout was so light? (weather, another tourny...)

I'm not too sure why the turnout was light. Usually, this room draws quite a few players. In past tournaments at First Break when the attendance was heavy, there were lengthy wait times between matches.

This is a great tournament for players of all caliber, and in a race to 9 in the winners' bracket or a race to 7 in the losers' bracket, anybody can get there if you bring your best game to the table.

As you know, Skess, the cost of attending events can become a strain on the pocketbook when you have to pay for hotel lodging, entry fee, food, travel expenses, et cetera. There were not very many out-of-State players this past weekend, with the exception of the Tiger-sponsored star, UPA's No. 1-ranked Shawn Putnam, who delighted the crowd of railbirds and cast of regulars with his excellent style of play.

First Break now has a progressive Big Rack. Each Thursday, they will be hosting a local $20-entry-fee tournament, and two players' names will be picked to break the rack. The monies will keep on rising until somebody successfully makes a ball on the break and runs out. I know where we will be this coming Thursday.

Yesterday, they sold tickets for the Big Rack. Young Gun Brandon Shuff, Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh, Keith, and Shawn Putnam were some of the players who took a crack at it. Brandon made a ball on the break and looked like he had a clean run-out, but after making the 1-ball, he flubbed the 2-ball. Keith also made a ball on the break and had a good opportunity to win, but when he got to the 4-ball, he missed. Shawn Putnam broke the balls like a cannon, and I thought he was going to get there, but he too ran a few balls and couldn't bring it to a close. The table which is being used for the Big Rack has double-shimmed pockets. It's a tough run-out, but it is definitely doable!

Also, I'd like to add a noteworthy mention. I thought it was really cool that the staff of the Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour gave away $30 Accu-Stats gift certificates to not only the players who finished 9 through 12 in addition to their tournament winnings, but also to the two players who came in last place. It's a nice gesture, and I know it was appreciated by all the lucky ones who received those wonderful Accu-Stats gift certificates. :)

The B-day kids!

As promised in the tournament thread, here's the pic I took of the B-day kids with their cake. I figure it'll get more viewership here on the main forum. ;)

Skess,

As JAM said, we got in excess of 90 players there once or twice, and having that many players try and finish in two days on 11 tables is an astranomical task. The last time we had that many, players had to wait up to 4 and 5 hours between matches on day one, and that is with a race-to-seven format in both brackets. Plus, there is not enough seating space to accommodate that many people. A few players personally told me that they prefer not to play there because of that reason after the last big one we had there. So, I guess a big chunk of our regulars avoided it because of that, which then ironically resulted in a small turnout without any of the aformentioned problems. And then it was also a nice weekend for being outside, so that may have kept one or two away. We still had a good tournament, though. It really is a great room for spectators. Perfect for a 64-player field! Maybe next time. We're back there Aug 13-14 for 9-Ball, and we have an amateur 8-Ball tourney there Jun 25-26, which gets about the same number as we had this past weekend.

Another factor that enters into the equation is the Pennsylvania State 9-Ball Championship was happening at the same time in Indiana, PA, which CaptainJR posted about this morning. I never saw a tournament announcement relating to this tourney on any pool forum.

Brett Stottlemyer, who won last year's Season Finale on the PP 9-Ball Tour, won the PA State 9-Ball Championship this past weekend! I guess you know you've made it in the pool circuit when you can search Google and your name comes up. I had to Google-ize Brett to get the correct spelling of his last name! :p
