Today is the second day of the Open event, and the Ladies tourney begins at 11:00 a.m. Twelve players remain in the Open event. The lovely Timberly, Beetle from Potomac, I think EggMcDogit, Black-Balled, and Keith were some of the AzBilliards' members in attendance, as well as NineballCC, Alinco, and Prinsnick, who keep this tour running strong.
There were 47 players who showed up to compete in the FIRST Tiger/Planet Pool 9-Ball tournament, with Tiger as the new title sponsor. The turnout was somewhat disappointing, considering most of the PP 9-Ball tournaments at this pool room attracted 100-plus players in the past, but the level of play was a plus. Shawn Putnam, also sponsored by Tiger, came to First Break and gave it his all, but he ran into a little trouble when he met Delaware Gentleman Player Kevin West. Racing to 9, the match seasawed back and forth, but when the dust settled, Shawn came out on top after a very hard-fought battle.
Two ladies decided to get in the Open event: Veteran WPBA Pro Sueyen Rhee and Young Gun Pam Treadway, the new kid on the block. Ironically, when the charts were drawn, wouldn't you know it, these two gals had to play each other the very first match.
Pam came out of the gate like a front-runner and kept Sueyen benched, 4-zip, racing to 9. Sueyen never gave up and managed to get on the board after a miss by Pam, 4 to 1. Then things began to take a turn when Sueyen dug in her heels and let Pam know she was there. After a session of brilliant play, the score came to the infamous hill-hill. The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife, and all eyes were on the two ladies. Pam was running out for the win and got out of line, resulting in a miss, handing Sueyan the victory. This was a very thrilling set for the railbird sweaters.
Black-Balled advanced the charts, but faced a determined UPA Touring Pro Mike Davis who sent AzBilliards' Walter Kochs to the B side. Ryan McCreesh will make a return appearance from the A side of the charts. He's playing with a new Predator cue stick and has boasted to all that this is a weapon of mass destruction. He said he's going to win the whole tournament and is taking no prisoners, but there's a few combatants who may give Ryan a run for his money. [Hi, Ryan!

Keith McCready lost a hill-hill to a player from Virginia Beach, who's originally from Tampa. He was the dark horse of the tournament, and everybody was whispering, wondering who this fellow was. We're heading on over to Sterling at high noon for a showdown. Keith is in the losers' bracket and hopes to bring his "A" game with him. Pookie also competed in the tournament, but I can't remember where he is on the charts.
Josh Dickerson of Richmond, VA came to First Break to play, and he passed out fliers for the upcoming Virginia State 9-Ball Championship to be held at The Playing Field in Richmond, VA which will be held on July 23-24, 2005. He is responsible for bringing back this Virginia title tournament after a lengthy absence. The first Virginia State 9-Ball Championship under his direction occurred last year, which was won by Chris Lauer of Fredericksburg, VA. Many players in this area expressed interest and are planning on attending.
One of the highlights of the tournament for me was seeing Todd of Parrot Cues, who also happens to be a sponsor of the Tiger/PP 9-Ball Tour, knock down quite a few players on the A side of the charts. He also was providing cue maintenance and repair on site between matches, which was definitely appreciated by all the players. Young Gun Brandon Shuff has been playing with a sliver of a tip for months now, and he FINALLY got a new tip, thanks to Todd being there.
Well, that's a snippet of the festivities. The winner is anybody's guess. Stay tuned...
