Tight Pin

A friend is having a problem with a cue - while screwing the shaft into the butt, the shaft gets harder and harder to turn the deeper it goes down the pin. The pin screws directly into the wood of the shaft (no insert). Any ideas on what would cause this and how to repair?

Thanks,

Can also try a little car wax on the pin and the shaft threads.

Absolutely don't use liquid car wax, paste is probably okay. I use a tiny bit of bee's wax or cue wax. Liquid car wax will soak into the threads and expand them and if to much is used will split the shaft.

tight pin

a little dish soap lightly with a q-tip in hole, lightly heat pin,15 or 20 sec. with bic lighter tighten and let it stand for a minute.this will almost mold wood threads to a pin.you may have to heat more or less depending on just how tight it is.

This could be cause.

I should have explained better, yes you can use paste wax but just alittle goes a long way. Most of the time the cause of the problem is moisture that has caused the threads to swell. I use the 308 flat pitch pin in 3/8 x 10 and they are snug anyway. I have customers all the time that came back after several weeks or months that have the problem of the shaft getting real tight. I can retap and it is still real tight and have to use .308 drill to make right again. Alittle paste car wax will seal the threads and help keep moisture out.

As per Tom Hay, it's most likely cuz the shaft was tapped with an undersized tap to purposefully make a tight fit. That's not a horrible thing, and it will loosen up over the years. If you don't like it, run the regular size tap down the shaft and the problem should be solved.

Another slim possibility is that the cue has a genuine Uniloc Radial pin, but the shaft was tapped with the look-a-like radial tap (or vice versa). The only fix for this is to bore out the shaft, plug it, and tap with the correct tap.
