Tight Pockets

I think I have found what the problem might be. I was just using balls to measure the pockets before so today I got out the tape measure. Come to find out my corner pockets are actually 4 and 1/8 inches.

Maybe the Mighty Earl would be a machine at 4 1/8 inch pockets but this is just too tight for me. I am going to contact my mechanic and tell him to come back and open them up a little. No wonder I was making shots on Nick Varner's Gold Crown V with 4 and 7/8 inch pockets.

Everyone in this thread must be the best pool player in their town. Wish I could say 4.5" pockets is too loose.

Ya talking about nines and the Hat? I've never cared for the tables at 9's ( been playing on those for let's say 25 years lol ) and I know Hat has 2 or 3 of I guess " triple shimmer tables ". They always put non locals on one of those three if action and they don't know any better.

Yeah, Nines has the open faces... and specifically table 11 at Top hat was the table I was referring to with the 4 inch pockets.

Have you performed the 4 ball test yet?

I'll take a table with tight pockets that are faced well over huge pockets that don't accept balls any day of the week. My biggest frustration where I usually play is that the pockets aren't tight, but it rattles and spits out balls all day long. Even easy shots can be nail biters if they're close to a rail.

Think 11 is always referred to as Black Henry's table lol. He knows that table inside and out, I've seen him really take it down on that table! Thanks for the heads up on models at 9's, I've always wondered and only knew that they were not GC's.

Ha ha. Diamond pro cut pockets are freaking hard to play on, and now people think they are too tight. You guys are all nuts, IMO:) Ha ha ha.

I want 6" pockets on my home table!

The realization of getting older, and probably never going to ever do any real gambling or tournaments anymore..... I dont need a practice table to ruin my confidence. I want a "fun" table to have.....well, fun, on.

My current setup is 4.5" and when we move, and the table gets taken down, Im going to have the pockets opened up to at least 4.75" I wish I would have done it from the start, but pride, ego, whatever you want to call it, said no..... go tight. :frown:

User error.

All the balls went in. I hit them at slow speed (lag) to about break speed. They all found the bottom of the pocket with seemingly no problem. Didn't notice any rattling around before they fell either.

So, what does that tell me?

What that says is that the pockets have no problems accepting the balls being pocketed if they're shot correctly into the pockets, so I'd be suspect of your aiming rattling the balls in the pockets and not the pockets as they take.the balls in shot even at near break speed.

This shot would constantly go in even if the pockets were 3.5 inches. This is what you might call a gimme. Not sure what you are getting at here RKC.

Like I have said before, if you hit the shot just right it will go in down the rail. But unless your name is Moses or Efren or Earl you typically don't hit those shots just exactly perfect. And Efren and Earl don't either.

If there was someway to put a little angle on these shots, that would give a better indication. In the shot below I am confident this ball would go in on most pockets. But it would have to be hit with slow speed on my table for it to fall. No way it would go in as diagrammed with any speed besides slow on my table.

I can tell you, just as I stated before, without any doubt whatsoever there are shots on super tight tables that just will not go - for instance if you have to draw out for position on the next ball, that absolutely SHOULD GO and does go on a " normal " table. I think this is what RKC is talking about and it definitely is what I'm talking about. You should not have to change the game the way it's meant to be played just because you're on a gaff table.

OK fine. So if you're into archery and in an archery tourney you should have to be able to split an arrow to win?????

What he's talking about is the infamous Gold Crown rattle. Where you can hit the middle of the facing and have no chance of making that ball.

Isn't that the point of.....pocket speed? Same shot played hard, won't go in, shot soft...ball drops....what's the confusion?
