Tim Scruggs vs. Tad

Hi All,

I am in the market for a Scruggs que and a friend of mine told me to look at a Tad as well.

Has anyone hit with both?
If so, what are your thoughts on the two?

Thanks,
Sherwin

I've only hit with two Scruggs and one Tad, but the Scruggs are only memorable since they where nothing like the Tad, which was simply amazing.

They both hit different.
Tad is a harder hitting cue, like a szam or Hercek.
Both are great cues.
Tad cues have great shaft wood.
Maybe some of the best available.

Both good cues, I'm a little more biased towards Tad cues, definitely Tad's have the best shaft wood.

I have a Scruggs sneaky and it's much more whippy than my tad plain Jane. Both are high quality, good hitting cues and have a lot of feel despite hitting differently. Which one you decide on should be up to personal preference. In the end, there is no substitute for just trying both out and seeing what you like. My personal recommendation would be a tad with the big pin and phenolic joint.

I second this sentiment...

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

I heard there is a big tournament / expo coming up in May in Vegas.
Do you think they will have Tad's there?

I've been trying to find one to hit with but haven't had any luck yet.

I say...
If you want a point/ veneer cue, I suggest you shop for a while and get what you really want. You might even find a seller who would discuss a return option for you.

If you just want to get in the door then snap up the first plain jane you find.

I am a big Tad fan. Having said that, both cues will not disappoint in terms of performance. I believe it is much more difficult to find a Tad than a Scruggs. Most of Tad's cue go oversees and command big money.

I also favor Tad's designs over Scruggs (although Scruggs also has awesome designs too!). It's just Tad's can be recognized across the room.

Good luck in your search.

Edit: Search the Cue and Case Gallery forum under "kohara" to see a bunch of Tads

BCAPL Nationals at Riviera May 9 through May 20

Joe Salazar "Connoisseur of Custom Cues" generally has a booth there and has many higher end cues to choose from. I purchased my Scruggs from him.

PM me if you would like his cell

Both are good cues and the playability depends on the individual as to which he or she prefers. IMO TAD's are in a place by themselves, simply the best playing cues ever made. I have yet to pick up a TAD I didn't like. It's no wonder a 25 year old plain-jane Tad can still command $1,500-2,000 in the used cue market. Again that's just my opinion, based on 40+ years of hitting pool balls with just about every cue made by "name" cue makers.

I haven't tried a Scruggs, but have played with a lot of different cues and TAD is my favorite. I have 3. Two are big pin, which I prefer by just a little bit over the S/S piloted one I have.

I have hit with a couple of Tim Shruggs cues and my everyday player is a Tad with mitered veneers. The Tad was by far the best hitting cue for me as I like harder hitting cues and slimmer butts. But as they say the hit and feel is personal.

The main thing about the Tad as everybody has mentioned is the shaft-wood. I have two shafts, one is old growth and the other is newer and these are the best 2 shafts I have seen come with one cue.

I got the cue from a collector who owned around 20 customs from a lot of the major custom cue makers (eg, 2 x Shruggs, Tascarella, older Black Boars, Bert Schrager, Jerry Franklin, and newer South Wests) and was lucky enough to have the opportunity to hit balls with all of them for that afternoon before coming up with a deal of which cue I would like to buy.

Although the Tad cue was by far modest in price range compared to several of his cues and half of what I was willing to spend. The Tad's shaft-wood was the major driver in my choice as it stood out above all of them in his particular collection. The balance on the cue was also a major factor.

But once again it is all down to personal preference and how the cue suits your particular playing style. Moreover, it also doesn't mean to suggest that these cue makers don't all have their own advantages in certain specifications over each other.
