These are wonderful old photos...I know this area well.
Does anyone know the name of the Manhattan pool room in on the south side of 14th St., near 14th and Bowery? It was an old theater, a porno joint, then Spanish language films, then a rock music venue called "The Academy of Music". The pool room was upstairs. This was in the 60's/70's.

I like pics like this. It seems to have been the good ole days with Grand buildings.

Now, those Grand old buildings have given way to modern architecture which isn't quite so pretty in many cases.

Its nice when a Heritage Society can step in and have certain buildings declared as Heritage Sites and save some of them.

Where I live, we have some Government buildings that were completely renovated modern on the inside but kept the outside original.

This is our old City Hall. I have never been able to believe that they tore this one down for an ugly high rise. someone should have had their butts kicked royally over that one.

Short answer, Julian's and the Palladium stood at that location.

Long answer,

Play to the tune of Come Dancing by the Kinks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs2kFrGluKs

*Finnegan play the part of Ray Davies narration*

They put a NYU dorm over this piece of land
Where the supermarket Trader Joe's now currently stand.
Before that they tore down Julian's Billiard Academy
On the same site that used to be the local Pally
That's where the big man, George Mikula used to come and play.
I used to go there and watch on a Saturday.

Come play 8-ball,
All Stuy kids hang out and try to make a ball.
Why not come play 8-ball, it's only natural?

*skip middle stanza*

*last stanza*

The day they tore down Julians and the Pallly
Incoming NYU freshmen didn't care, or blink an eye.
The day they knocked down the Pally.
Part of my pool teenhood died, just died.

Now I'm grown up and playing league at Amsterdam,
And Barouty now used to run straight pool where Corner Billiards used to stand.
My cousin's married, with kids and she lives out of state.
Thursday night its my turn to break and run, now it's my opponent turn to wait.
BCA rules lets me get away with things that old house rules never could,
But if I ask to play called pocket 8-ball I wonder if anyone would,

Come play 8-ball,
Come on bangers, have yourself a ball.
Don't be afraid to scratch,
It's only natural.

I knew George well.

Makes me sad to think about. One of the most talented people I've ever met. Was so mean and nasty, but always nice to me. Used to hang with him at Chelsea billiards. Once even racked for him for a 300+ ball run. He'd get sober for a few months at a time and get right back into stroke. He'd entertain ginky and I for hours with his stories. I remember this one time he cleaned up because he got a trick shot doing a 7Up commercial. We practiced that shot for a week straight. I couldn't wait to talk to him after the filming. But somewhere between the time the filming stopped and coming to Chelsea, he fell off the wagon and disappeared for a week.

RIP George and Ginky!!!

Ginky and George were a riot, I miss both of them.

All I can say is wow, that is,was, a beautiful building! To bad!

1911...Ralph Greenleaf would turn twelve that year, and Willie Mosconi would not even be born for another two years.
