Does anyone use the "rubber toughened cyanoacrylate"?

It's supposed to give a little or not become brittle?

What is the consensus of the best adhesive to use?

Jeff, I suspect that most people are using Super Gel for tip's these days. The only time I do not use it, is on Helmstetter Cues and some other Asian imports, due to the Plastic material used in the Ferrules. I am uncertain what they use but super glue gel doesn't like to stick to it.

I use the rubber toughened and haven't had any problems with it. I have never tried it on a Asian ferruled cue. ( Ivorine, aegis, Ivory no problems)

The best glue on the planet to use is Gorilla glue...if you can wait overnight for it to dry. CA gel otherwise.;)

Doesn't it cause a mess?

I'm with Kevin-I've found nothing as effective as Gorilla Glue. I'm not a pro so take my opinions as such, but I do 3-4 tips a month for my own cues and those of my buddies. Downsides to Gorilla Glue are the long cure times, the need to clamp, and the necessity to mask off the ferrule since it expands as it cures. On the good side, it doesn't care what the material is (phenolics, composites etc.) it just flat works and doesn't come loose. Also, since it doesn't dry as hard as super glue, it's easier to cut off an old tip, which is a big advantage for someone who is constantly experimenting with tips. Even in my limited experience, I've seen some ferrule mating surfaces butchered up from previous tip jobs. The expansion of the glue will help fill the smaller gouges, so you don't need to surface the ferrule absolutely perfect. One final note if you're new to tip repair-Don't go near one of those old-style mechanical tip clamps. Stretch a wide rubber band over the tip and run a couple turns of tape around the shaft to keep it taut. Do it right and you'll only need to do it once.

No...just a very small yellow hard foam drip...it takes a minimal amount. I believe it gives a softer hit than the glassy CA type hit.;)

Gorilla glue

It gives a nice hit, maybe more like the old hide glue. I make sure to wipe off any excess before letting it dry in my lathe overnight. It penetrates the tip some and leaves a dark contact edge, looks just like it has a thin pad under the tip. If you have the shaft running true in your chuck it will clean up very easy and does not seem to stain ferrules. I have yet to find a ferrule it would not adhere perfectly to.

Do you wet it

When using Gorilla glue on wood you wet either one side or both sides with water so is this the same with a tip and ferrule or just dampen one side,---Leonard

Wetting surfaces

I have had great success wetting both sides, blotting them dry after a min to dampen, then gluing. I know the instructions on the glue bottle reads: need only dampen one surface, but I stand by my method of doing both. I want the glue activated on both surfaces. But I am sure there are many ways to repair a cue.

I've always used regular Loctite Super Glue and have never had a tip come off. It dries really fast too. The only bad thing is when it gets on my fingers I end up having to sand it off. I do about 25-35 tips a month and haven't had anything else make me as happy as the Loctite Super Glue.

I've been using 454 on all ferrules for a number of years. It sticks very well with most ferrules but I do have some problems with cuetech ferrules and some of the Asian tube ferrules. Any one have a glue that works equally well as 454 on these types of ferrules?
