Tip Diameter?

What tip diameter do you use?

I currently use 12.75mm and am thinking of going down to 12.25mm. Im not asking if one tip size is better then the other. Im just curious as to what the majority of the players here use. thanks for the feedback ;)
 
I'm at 12 mm even on both my shooters.

I like em thinner then most though...the average will be between 12.5 and 13...closer to 13 I'd imagine.

I shot with 13mm most of my Pool career, but shoot with a 12,75mm now.
I changed a few years back when I polled what equipement the pros used and what sizes of tips they use. 12.75mm was the most used size by pros at that time.
 
My favorite playing cues are in the mid-12's. Looks like quite a few others use shafts in the same range.

But I've always wondered what would happen if a minimum diameter shaft were tried - something on the order of 10 mm. (I forget the "legal" WPA minimum... is it 9mm?)

I would expect lower deflection due to more flexibility and lower weight, maybe good "action" with less tip offset on the cueball, but it's an expensive. one-way experiment, so I would appreciate feedback from someone who has actually tried it.

I've found I prefer a thinner tip in the 12mm-12.2mm range, but I have more accuracy and higher percentage with a 12.75-13mm shaft. Once I get better fundamentals I'll probably move down to a 12-12.2mm shaft when I can find a cuemaker who is willing to go that low, and I have the spare cash.

Although if I keep the same shaft for any significant length of time it will invariably get slimmer from tip changes & shaft cleanings, I have always felt most comfortable with a 13mm for almost 20 years (except for the 6-months of temporary insanity I had many years back with a 314 :D ).

I would expect to have a harder time hitting center ball, and making good stop shots, virtually every shot will have to be thrown in (not implying anything, just stating my prediction).
 
I have always played with a 13mm, or near that and always will. It now seems that most players I know use 12.5-12.8mm. The trend definitely seems that the tip diameter is getting smaller. I think this is largely due to the fact that it has been proven that lower end mass reduces squirt. JMO.
 
13.2 mm playing cue.

Thin shafts get too whippy, need a stiff shaft to do the job.

A good break cue will have 14 mm.

Pencil shafts good for snooker.

I once realized that I preferred a smaller diameter shaft than is customary. I had my cuemaker turn down my custom 13mm shaft to 11 mm. I played with that for over a year, and thought I liked it because I could put a whole lot of junk on the ball. Well, I too clean my shaft with sandpaper and it became even thinner. I also realized that it was easier to pocket balls with a thicker shaft (ie. accuracy increases dramatically). So I began experimenting with thicker ones. I again had a cuemaker make me a custom shaft, this time it was around 12. Perfect mix of accuracy, and deflective properties. I also don't like that it is harder to get my fingers around a thicker shaft.

So, if you are looking for accuracy, or you are at a beginner to C player level, stick with 12.5 to 13mm to be safe.

On the other hand, if you pocket balls well already, and would like an easier time putting more spin on the cue ball, then having a thinner shaft would be better, but don't overdo it like I did. Stick with 11.75 to 12.25
