Tip question

A few years back, I got an order of Moori tips that were extremely difficult to get to hold glue and stay on a cue. I actually moved away from Moori tips for quite a while due to that reason.

Recently, I picked up a dozen Moori tips. I have installed 3 of them so far, and none stayed on. One popped off the ferrule the first time it was played, and the other popped off when I went to finish the tip shaping on the lathe. I took it off, recleaned/flattened the ferrule again, re-applied another Moori, and let it cure for double the normal time. It also came off.

Nothing else that I am using has changed. I use a top quality gel cyanoacrylic glue which has worked fantastic for me for years. I don't remember the last time I had a tip pop off other than these 3.

Any one had any similar experiences with Moori tips recently?

Joe...try as I learned from Mr. Searing. Appy a thin film of the CA to each the tip back & ferrule face. Let this dry. LIGHTLY scuff each surface again and glue with the CA as normal. You'll have no more problems with the Moori's popping off. The first layer primes or acts as a sealer, not letting the Moori soak up the CA creating a poor bond. Never have I had a single issue since using this method. Or if you are in no hurry...use Gorilla glue (not the Gorilla CA), dampen the tip back with water, glue and let it sit overnight with pressure holding the tip. That makes a wonderful bond as well.
Hope this helps.

What Kevin shared is the correct way to overcome most gluing problems. Some of these new white plastic ferrules are oily based and won't hold tips very well unless you wipe the front of the ferrule with laquer thinner and give that a few minutes to evaporate and then install the tip. Another issue is that some of the USA made CA glues have changed where they are made and are not as good now that they are made in Brazil. What brand are you using?

Hi Joe,

What kind of glue are you using? Loc-tite gel seem to work really well for me with moori. I usually just rough up the tip on 220 grit (lightly)...make sure you don't touch the ferrule surface with your finger...apply glue on tip...pressed and hold for 30 sec to 1 minute. tip should be ready to cut and shape.

regards,
Duc.

The white gorilla glue works good. I've never had a problem with Loctite gel either. Most all popped off tips I've ran accross are either a ferrule that doesn't glue well, or one of the surfaces isn't completely flat. Not saying your doing it wrong, just letting you know what I've ran into.

Could be and old trick I use but I found it out by trial and error;
Face the ferrule, clean up with a paper towel with one dash of de-greaser (I use spray can - one tiny hit on the top).

Lightly rotate the tip on fine paper, wipe off with a little damped paper towel

Burnish the back of the tip

Apply CA

Usually works for me, where I always use Loctite 454.

I guess this may give the same effect as sealing with CA -> face -> glue.

I found burnishing the tip helped a lot when I was not using gel, where a non
burnished tip soaked in the thin glue and made the last layers on the tip
hard like plastic.

Just my way of solving the Moori and Kamui tips :embarrassed2:

also if its too cold or moist in your shop your glue will not set up right

i had a problem when i first moved shops 2 years ago.

where are you doing the tips?

Thanks for all the help, guys.

I use either Loctite or Duragel....settled on those some time back. Preference is the loctite.

I use the Cuesmith lathe exclusively in tip application, so there is no touching of the face of the ferrule or the tip either, for that matter.

The equipment is set up in a controled environment. Both the lathe and supplies (glues, tips, etc) stay right around 68 degrees.

Kevin and Chris....thanks for the info on "sealing" the tips with CA before actual installation. I am going to give that a shot on a tip right now.

I appreciate the help. Never had an issue with anything but the Mooris and I just could not figure it out.

Just curious, but what do you use for a tip vice when gluing? Do You use your tail stock to apply the pressure by any chance? I quit using My tail stock sometime back and started just centering the tip, then using My thumb to hold pressure, and I seem to have far fewer issues.

Yes, I use the tail stock to center the tip and maintain constant pressure until the glue has dried. The Mooris are the ONLY tip that I have had any "pop-off" issues with, and I have done thousands of tips, I am sure.

Moisture is what sets off super type glues. I always breath heavily on the backs of tips so that there is some moisture available. I found long ago that this does not work with Mooris. I lick the back of Mooris and then wipe them dry and then they stick the same as all of the other tips that I install.

You may just need to wet them Like dick mentioned or use the searing method.

I wasn't having a major issue with any other tips at the time either. Moori was the biggest problem as You say, but Yours could be a different issue I suppose, just thought I'd mention something that helped Me.

One thing about Mooris is they don't come pre domed with a radius on them but are flat. It could have either been that I was using too much tail stock pressure, squeezing too much glue out, or It could have been cupping the tip. I did notice a tip that popped off had a cupped face after wards, and It wasn't installed that way. It was perfectly flat when installed.

Anyway a lot of good suggestions in this thread, so something someone has mentioned, should at least help decrease the odds of It happening as often.

Good luck with It:smile: Greg
