I also said I use several cues of varying tip diameter on my practice table AT HOME. I do not do this at the pool hall on league nights or in a tournament. I basically have a main shooting cue that I use, and it is always a Z shaft for me as far as competing goes.
FWIW, I have an Instroke Cowboy 3x7 case with my break cue (plus an extra 12mm shaft in case I ever wanna loan the cue to a friend for the night), my main player, a Lucasi LE-66 butt w/one Z and one Z-2 shaft both w/sniper tips, plus the stock Lucasi shaft just because I have it, and a Jacoby D11 with both the stock shaft and a 314-2 shaft, which I am currently transitioning into my main "player". This is what I take to the pool hall with me. It's more cues/shafts than I need for a normal night of pool, but when I get "into" a hobby, I usually like to at least have semi-decent equipment and plenty of it. I ain't gonna die with all my money in the bank like a lot of people do

I believe this is true, and the reason is that a smaller tip gives a clearer picture of exactly where you're hitting the CB.
I don't believe a smaller tip allows you to hit any farther out on the CB than a larger tip - you'll miscue at the same place with either. But by seeing your contact point more clearly you're able to hit closer to the miscue limit with more confidence and consistency.

At some point though the shaft gets too thin and the overall hit of the shaft feels "weak"...I don't know how else to explain it...It just does not feel solid anymore when the shaft gets too thin..
12.75 seems to be my thickest point before it gets "unsightly"

i have to agree with the one about being able to see. when I shoot with a 13 it feels like i've uprooted a tree and am trying to shoot with the tree trunk ... i can't help but think, "is the cue ball even down there?"
in terms of the taper, mine is a 12mm shaft that is pulled back about 6" or so worth of pro-taper and then a smooth straight taper back after that.
and i completely agree with some people that if you take a high frame rate camera and record the shaft hitting the cue ball you will see more waiver and vibration in the smaller shaft - but oh well. Maybe I need to have my 13 turned to like a 12.5 and see what i think of it.
The other comment that was made today when we got back on the subject of it was "look at the top 10 or 20 pros out there - they all shoot with 12.5-13, and they do this for a living." now, i dont know if thats true or not, but it's probably somewhere around there ... i wouldn't necessarily say all...

A lot of players like this taper. I call it the Filipino taper.
I agree. I play with a 12mm diameter and it is almost that exact diameter for the first 14/15 inches of my shaft... and I believe it has less defelction.
I've never understood the camp that says "skinnier shafts have more deflection". That is counter-intuitive... thicker shafts will have more front end mass and bend less which means more cue ball squirt.

Lately I've been playing with a 12.75mm tip with very stiff taper, grows about 1mm to 12 in. back. I get plenty of action and still a very solid hit. I was playing with a longer taper at 12.5mm and could feel a bit of whippiness and that became kind of mental block on power shots.
You have to take into account the shape of the tip too. I was playing with a nickel shape and found I like a dime shape better with this setup.

I've tried playing on 12.75 and 13mm shafts for the past few months, but I loose atleast 1/4 of my game. Lack of ball control entirely.. the only benefit to me with the thicker diameter shaft is the gobs of english without as much curve after ball contact, but if you have a straight shot with a small tip it won't affect you. Now I am playing on a 12mm shaft with a relatively small taper and am happy as ever. Boy what a difference one mm makes.
