Tip Shape vs Deflection

Seeing how you are hitting nearer to the center of the cue tip, it should deflect less. I suspect it would be immeasurable.
 
predator claims in their research that a dime shape deflects 5-10% less than a nickel. though in my own experience, i haven't noticed a difference in deflection due to tip shape
 
It would make sense that it would squirt less if it were rounder. I play with tips significantly rounder than dime, I would how much of an impact it would actually make...

Talk to Eric Crisp of sugartree cues..he once stated that the thickness of your tip is more of a factor than the roundness.

I've seen many strong/money players prefer to use tips that are half size in height than normal tips.

Thicker tips are heavier...hence more deflection. I have my tips cut down in more than half when they're installed. Many of the cue guys look at my shaft and can't believe i'm waisting half the tip.

I feel the ball more when the tip is not very tall maybe 3-4 layers.
 
I wish I had the link still, it was a high speed photo of a break shot as it impacted the cue ball, The tip compressed like you wouldnt believe !
Myself and several others around my town dont like a tip to high.

After seeing the photo of that break shot it makes sence that a taller tip would cause some deflection, also how crisp someone strokes/plays would be another factor IMO. The tip shape would come into play I'd say if it, especially the higher it was. My 2 cents.

My playing tip is like that. When I used LePros I would always cut them way down. It help eliminate the mushroom and jumped really well...
 
I have my own opinion, but unless someone takes the time to perform some accurate and repeatable testing, similar to what Bob Meucci did with the shot robot rig, this thread will be full of speculation and theory, and prove absolutely nothing.
 
Yeah, I also prefer a shorter tip, I probably take half off a new tip already. I just can't seem to get the same feel with a thick tip.
 
I think the Robots know best on this one. But from my own experience I would say that the tip hardness also makes a difference on what happens when you change the shape of the tip. Really hard tips seem to cause more squirt when giving the tip a smaller radius.

In 2004, Bob Meucci's opinion was that a tip with a dime radius squirts less than a tip with a nickel radius, other things equal.
