Hi everybody. My first post. It's been great reading all of yours for a long time. Hope to be doin' it many, many more years. Wealth of good info on this forum!!! Please give me your input. I bought an OB1 a few months back and have had two tips break off since. The 1st break left a noticeable divot in the center of the ferrule, so my tip guy (reputable) shaved it down and replaced it with a soft Moori. That broke off last night in a local tournament. Is this a common problem with the OB1's? I know that they use filler in the ferrule which could decrease the adherence strength of the glue. Or is it just bad luck? Anybody else had this problem?

The center of the ferrule in the OB has a balsa wood dowel in it for filler. IIRC, the carbon fiber pad must be in place for the ferrule to be waranted. I'm not sure why your tips keep breaking off. I have played with my OB2 for around two months and not a single problem. Is the carbon fiber pad in place? If not, that might be the problem for the tip to keep popping off. I might be incorrrect, maybe someone with more experience can chime in. Good luck and welcome to our awesome forum buddy!
I've got half a dozen OB shafts, zero troubles... nada. Sounds like bad luck. If it is the shaft, and if you can provide some tangible assurance that your cue tech hasn't voided the warranty, the I'd bet Royce would make it right.
I can't see how the 1st tip coming off could leave a divot in the center of the ferrule - certainly not one available to see - unless the backing pad came off too. My 2 cts - that would clearly be a warranty issue. If your cue tech took it down, re-installed a tip w/o a pad, and it subsequently came off & caused more damage - I'd guess you need to hope Royce knows your cue tech personally...
One way or the other, call Royce & run it by him. He's great folk!

Now, for your OB-1 cue shaft. It sounds as though your cue smith may not be aware of the simple maintenance on our cue shafts. Our cue shafts come originally with either a card inside the package or now a label on the cue shaft itself that explains our carbon fiber tip pad. This information is also on our website under Care and Repairs, along with instructions for maintenance.

Soon you will start to see our tips with a red layer to help remind you when to replace the tip. Basically, you want to keep 2 layers at the sidewall of the tip. Any lower than that and you run the risk of having troubles.

Tip Problems
I can recall two times that i've had a problem with my tips. Once it popped off because a cue maker (will rename nameless) didn't do the best job in putting it on for me. Another time, it seems like I had bad luck. I was going through my regular practice warmups, and my tip popped off during a draw stroke. Besides that I've never had a tip pop off.
I will re-affirm what Royce said about having a tip too low on an OB shaft. I've noticed, after playing with an OB shaft for a year and four months, that when the tip does get low, you start feeling the sfaft alot more during contact with the cue ball. I've had two occasions where the tip was too low, and a piece had broken off or flaked off. That is understandable and is up to the player to make sure to replace the tip. I play with an Everest tip and absolutely love the way they play especially at the middle layers.
It sounds like you have nothing to really worry about, I'd just have your cue man replace the carbon fiber pad on the ferrule. Then attach a new tip once the pad has set. I find that if a cue maker doesn't sand the bottom of the tip before putting it on, you are more prone to have it pop off. This is what happen to me with the above mentioned cue maker. In any case hope this helps and good luck with your issue.
