Tips for carom cue

I want to experiment with a variety of tips for carom play to see what works best for me. Right now I have two shafts on my KF cue (www.poolcues.com.tw) and I really like the cue. It's a great cue. And, the KF tips are really good too.

I was thinking, though, of how on my pool cues and masse cues I have been so happy with the Sniper. What kinds of tips are most common on carom cues? I know Semih and Miguel use Moori, but I don't know if they use quick or medium.

I plan on competing one day in the future, particularly in Artistic Billiards, though perhaps in 3c, and I'd like to achieve the highest learning curve possible by centering first on the right equipment. I am perfectly satisfied with my KF cue, I love it. And since I have two shafts, I'd like to have two different tips. Should I just stick with a Sniper tip on my backup shaft?

Any input would be appreciated.

That's a good resource. Thanks for the list! For future searches of this topic, I'll go ahead and post it here to save others the hassle.

A Good Tip

During the 2001 Las Vegas World Cup, many of the world’s best 3-C
player’s were surveyed on what cue tips they use, along with other
cue data.

It seems that most Belgium players stayed with tradition, which is to
use a smaller tip size, while most other top players use tip sizes bet-
ween 11.5 and 12.0 mm.

Name Tip Size
mm Tip
Make Type Shaft type
Bitalis 11.4 Mori Hard Extra Stiff
Blomdahl 12.0 Mori Medium Varies with table
Ceulemans 12.0 Triangle Medium Stiff
DeBacker 11.6 Mori Medium Medium Stiff
Dielis 9.5 Chandivert Hard Stiff
Habraken 11.0 LePro Medium Stiff
Jaspers 11.7 Mori Medium Stiff
Leppens 10.5 Mori Medium Extra Stiff
Piedrabuena 12.0 Mori Medium Medium Stiff
Sang Lee 12.0 Mori Medium Medium Stiff
Sayginer 12.0 Mori Medium Stiff
Theriaga 12.0 Mori Medium Stiff
Sanetti 12.0 Chandivert Medium Medium Stiff

While all were quizzed on their tip size and shaft configuration selections, Dick
Jaspers summed up this subject best by stating that the 12 mm size was best for
power shots, while the 11.5 size handled cue ball spin best---an 11.7 mm tip was
his selection.

In my 3-C travels, it seems that the average 3-C player does not use a cue that
has tip and shaft configurations that compares to the above.

Incidently, most new cues come with inexpensive tip material.

The stiff shaft allows for much better cue ball deflection, thus much better object
ball hits---same for 12mm tip sizes---yet, having a good feel for cue ball spin, is important.

Hi Eric, Hope to be getting my new KF cues in two weeks , so how would you describe the shafts that came with your KF carom cue?
Dan

They're not as stiff as I thought a carom cue would have, almost though. Miguel Torres, who liked the cue, told me that one shaft was kind of like a cross between a pool cue and a billiard cue, perhaps because it had more flex. The other shaft was typical of a billiard cue in my opinion. But, like I've said before, I'm new to 3c so I haven't shot with that many billiard cues. But, I really like mine. I'm going to have my tip guy do a sniper tip on one of the shafts and leave a KF tip on the other. I think I'll be completely satisfied, all the way around.

But, now that I think about it, I should've had Miguel Torres, Mazin Shooni, and Semih Sayginer all autograph it when I had them at my side. Dang, why did I not think about that until just now?! Oh well, I'll have the chance in the future, Lord willing.

Please go to Kamuibrand.com There should be the answer to your tip questions about tips. Most cue makers say the best hit is hard moori and ivory ferrule will be the most solid hit. If you can perform the same shots in the kamui movie clips you will set new gueiness bk records in you artistic tournments. I remember you from your visit to Two Stooges. I personally bought kamui II's 110- for 1,475.00 frokm jp. Because in march they were not available in usa.

To keep this short I used Moori med for about 3 years and loved them, particularly the first batch. I got some about 6 months ago and found myself miss cueing with the newer tips. Decided to try Sniper tips. They feel a little harder but no miss cue and no sacrifice applying English that I can tell. I bought the Moori tips from a reputable guy. He would have had to be cheated with bogus Mooris for mine to be bogus tips.

3kushn,

This is interesting. I have used Moori Hard for years. When they changed to Moori Quick, I didn't notice any difference. Last year when I needed a new tip for one of my shafts, I decided to try Moori Medium for the first time. Guess what -- I get many more miscues with the medium. Is this happening to everyone? Does anyone have a theory on why this is happening?

Mark

I miscued an inordinate number of times with two different medium Mooris -- now have Kamui. The affliction is gone.

Hi there,

interesting that also experienced and good players like 3kushn telling same stories about the quality of Moori Tips. Also tried one last years-cut it off after 1 week. First shots were ok...then it turned crazy-was more like hitting with glass. No more Moori anymore.
Funny anyway- if i remember that *we all* were just playin LePro and Triangle and were happy :p until something new arrived .............^^
Atm playing a Kamui and they feel good to me. But thinkin about putting on a Triangle again. perhaps just a nostalgic flash^^

I've tried moori but they dont last ,latly I've been using Tiger Everest tips on both my 3 cushion and pool stick ,and like them alot ,hardly ever miscue .
