Tired of hearing about lessons...

I taught firearms at the police academy level for sixteen years. I believe that males are born with gene that makes them think they know how to shoot and handle weapons. They don't. Could there be a relationship with shooting pool too?

Not just shooting and pool... Males are born with a gene that makes them think they know everything and that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

I don't mind reading the post where everybody preach's....get a lesson. My only problem with it is that the majority of all they discuss is "your stroke". I may have missed one, but I haven't read a post or discussion from ANY instructor or teacher that didn't over emphasize the "GOT TO HAVE A CERTAIN STROKE". Basically saying you can't improve or be a great player without that perfect stroke. That's simply not true. Every great player out there has somewhat of a different stroke. Some long, some short, some fast, some slow. As long as your stroke is repeatable and your hitting the right angle, I don't care what it looks like, it will work. I do think everybody could benefit from a lesson or lessons, but not simply on their stroke. I know there are lower level players, beginners, etc. that really need help with their stroke. But not everybody.
Just my humble 2cents.......

Sorry, but you have missed a whole lot of posts. As long as you are hitting where you want to on the cb, at the speed you want to, at the angle you want, repeatedly, you have a great stroke. That is the definition of a great stroke.

What you are confusing is a great stroke with an orthodox stroke. Not an instructor on here would change the elites strokes. They might tweak a thing or two, but that is all. The goal of any stroke is to be repeatable and hit where you want to.

The reason orthodox strokes are mentioned often on here is because those asking are having trouble with their strokes. The orthodox method is the easiest and fastest to learn, and the easiest to troubleshoot for the player. So, if one doesn't have a repeatable, accurate stroke, that is the place to start.

For those who don't believe in lessons or whatever you want to call it. Do you use a jump cue? Did you learn on your own or did someone teach you? There is an aiming forum for a reason. Some people have issues where others dont. If you don't know what your doing wrong it's hard to fix it. To fix it some players may have to change what felt natural to them. It's hard to think your doing something right when it doesn't feel natural. That's where working with someone can help. Your a natural at pool, right. Have you ever had to be taught anything else in life?

you no longer have to believe me or anyone else......you will know

Not just shooting and pool... Males are born with a gene that makes them think they know everything and that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

You may have a point, the exceptional players will always believe there's a better way and try to find it every day. We know if we aren't getting better, we're going to get worse.

We've had success with coaching/teaching, however, I spend time helping students to believe they can improve by showing them specifically how {through demonstration and explanation}.

Once you are willing to believe you can improve rapidly, you can......then you no longer have to believe me or anyone else......you will know because you will have proven it to yourself......and this is how it works for all of us.

I agree that much can be gained here on AzB without spending $$$...and if you can get the help you want here, go for it. BTW, I recommended two instructors from right there in Cleveland...John "Chief" Harlach and Lance Kepler. Both are great teachers right in your back yard. Best wishes in finding what you're looking for.

I asked for a qualified instructor and the only recommendations I got were from guys that were 2 hours away from Cleveland...

Not true Tramp...at least if you want to be a PBIA Certified Instructor. All PBIA instructor candidates have to go through a serious training process, and are tested (written and skill). If they fail the test they do not make the grade as a PBIA instructor. At the same time, there are many great instructors who are not currently in the PBIA program...among them Dave Sapolis, Little Joe, Joe Tucker, Mark Wilson, and some others. The guys I mentioned are well known as teachers in their own right, and have my total respect, admiration, and are people I recommend to go to for some solid learning. Certainly not every PBIA instructor has taken students all the way to pro-level, but some of us have. Just because you might not know their name means nothing, as there's no way you could know even 10% of the top 1000 players just in this country, let alone around the world.

Oh...and CJ, saying that there has been no real advancement in instruction just shows how little you really know. You really should spend a couple of hours talking to your buddy Randyg! You might actually learn something.

In addition, you do not need to go through a qualifying process to instruct.

With apologies, I said that I have given a handful of lessons, over the years, to novices who paid me to do it.
I have probably been more critical of you, Lutz, Randy, et al, than I should have. I know you to be a good guy, and we have always gotten along well.

Dear Mr Mike Howerton,

if this happens to come across your view, I must tell you the thing I had mentioned a few weeks back in regards to being " licked off " while typing a response to the post and apparently took TOO LONG and it KICKED ME OUT --- AGAIN and would not retrieve my post after signing back in just as it asked me to do and once I did ------ POOF! MY SHI_ WAS GONE AGAIN!!! Leaving me with a BIG, EMPTY, BOX TO WRITE MY RESPONSE - ( WHICH I HAD ALREADY DONE!!!! )

So Mike, if there is ANY WAY whatsoever u are able to address this onbur end it would be SO SO SO APPRECIATED!!!! I can not speak for anyone other than myself, but I am very confident if this happens to me on occasion then it ALSO happens to others too. And once again JUST speaking for myself, when this happens it is one of the MOST ANNOYING things in the world and instantaneously causes me to want to smash sh_t ON THE SPOT.

While this may not be the case with everyone - it is with me for this reason & and this reason alone...... While I like to consider myself a patient man; and I REALLY, REALLY want to & try to be I feel as usual honesty is the best policy. Now im not upset about my thoughts not being posted in a timely manner but rather the WASTE OF EFFORT in the process.

Now, I must tell you that I am not the best typist ever - not by a long shot. In school o fell in the crack where they had stopped the typing classes but had not yet instituted computer classes so basically I SUCK AT TYPING!!!!! BAD enough anyway. I can do whaterever needs done but honestly when I was in " the corporate world " I did rely heavily on my secretary or my assistant to take car of the typing chores. Now with that being said; it did take me EVERY bit of 20mins if not 30 to type my 4-5 paragraph response. YEA I KNOW --- I SUCK BUT THATS NOT THE POINT!!!

As I have stated before, this prob has happened to me maybe a couple dozen times before on larger response posts. Normally 99.9% of the time I do not bother RE- TYPING the response cause im too busy STEAMING.

Mike, I write you this partially just venting, but more so hoping y will be able to somehow correct this cause honestly I LOVE AZB but with every post that is lost ( in space ) it takes just a little more away from AZB each time. I have to let you know that for sure I am not the only one that feels this way.

In closing I must tell yall once more I LOVE AZB and only want the best for it!!!!!!!!

Thank you Tramp! You're right...we have always gotten along well, and I love your sense of humor.

I can appreciate that there are some less-than-qualified teachers out there. That said, we're trying to professionalize the instruction industry, by creating world standards in teaching, so we can grow the profession. There are literally millions of people who will, given the opportunity, pursue pool lessons. We need thousands of qualified instructors to serve that need. That's a mission of the Professional Billiards Instructor Association. Randyg, who leads the PBIA, is certainly one of the, if not THE top instructor in the world. He's recently been sought out by several foreign billiard organizations to consult, teach and train instructors, along with other services. All of this points to a desire to, and a plan to implement, to get quality billiard instruction to poolplayers everywhere.

There you go. :)

I shall try this once more Tramp.

Believe it or not I actually took a " lesson " from the " house pro " after about a month of taking pool seriously. My dad paid for several lessons from the local " house pro " for me. Truthfully after one full lesson I was like WTF!!!!!!!.

But hey, I thought to myself shit im just a kid & what the hell do I know right???? Well after the first lesson I honestly thought this was just a joke!!! But I went along cause ----- what the hell do I know and being VERY GREEN I thought well hey maybe this is how it actually works???

Truth be told, I finished my " lessons " and played for a month or two and by that point I was beating my " instructors " head in playing even!!! Ok, nothing more to learn here as I felt I had graduated. Now it was time to leave this place behind and move on up to Jack & Jills - which I considered Grad school!

So thinking I was off to " Grad " school off I went with a big ol smile, excited as could be, --- THE WORLD IS MY OYSTER is my mentality!!! Or so I thought. In reality, my first day ( night ) in Jack & Jills was [ ACTUALLY ] my FIRST DAY IN KIDDY-GARDEN!!!!! For real, all jokes aside.

Well after awhile the subject of me taking lessons came up. When I was asked ( who ) did I take lessons from - I once again was " schooled ". Come to find out the " house pro " I had been taking " lessons " from was im fact just an old man that was homeless. The owner felt bad for him and allowed him to give lessons in his room with the hope that it would help him out at least a little bit. I wasn't mad or upset because it was a very sad situation and while not right the intentions were good.

Downside : I had to start ALL OVER. Fundamentals all wrong and everything subsequent. No biggie - all good and in retrospect best thing that could've ever happened. Now im learning from GEESE & CIGAR TOM amongst many others!!!

Once again moving forward a little bit. My Senior tear I started my OWN business. With the help of my Uncle Gary I was able to buy my own Tow truck and start my own towing service. I played my cards right and within a couple months I had my own lot, couple of my own trucks, and five people working for me fulltime! ALL AT SIXTEEN YEARS OLD!!! And yes, I was a year ahead in school before anyone asks.

This os how this info relates to story: yes I considered myself blessed! So much in fact that after six months I was able to buy a five bedroom, 3 bathroom, 4 car garage on 3.72 acre lot ( not outright ofcourss but financed none the less ) and was doing ok for myself.

Well after him being " missing " for several years my " instructor " popped back up one day at Jack & Jills and truthfully looked bad, REAL BAD. At my young age I thought " near dead " actually. Well as I said earlier I had no bad feelings whatsoever and all I wanted to do was to be able to help. I really didn't know how, but I KNEW I had to.

I gave this old man free room and board, gave him a job. Hopefully after everything was said and done this all helped him in some way. I actually began giving HIM LESSONS NOW LOL! :D

PS : OTTS, if by any chance you are still alive and read this somehow OR someone realts this to him - want u to know still live ya bro and call me if there is ANYTHING WHATSOEVER THAT U NEED OR ANYTHING WHATSOEVER THAT I CAN DO FOR YOU ALL YA NEED TO DO IS JUST LET ME KNOW, MY DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN FOR YOU BRO!!!

Thanks but yes I do that. Intact I've tries everything I could possibly think of to Dave the post countless ways, countless times. I actually discussed this all in detail recently in someone's thread about AZB slowing down early in the morning if ya feel like looking it up.

On another note, which I truly do not think is related but how knows??? But ya NEVER SEE ME POST ANY PICS -- well this is not by choice. I tried for better than a year to post pics on occasion. I tried every thing you could possibly imagine. I tried EVERY tip, trick, suggestion given by other AZB'ers and no go. I discussed this at length with Mr Wilson and he couldn't figure it out either. The best he came up with was MAYBE my phone ( Windows Phone ) was possibly partially not compatible with " their system " so I left it alone since then and haven't tried anymore.

Luckily, if there is a pic I REALLY want to post I email it to JAM and she posts it for me ( cause JAM IS AWESOME!!! THANKS AGAIN JAM, AND COME BACK MORE OFTEN SOON CAUSE I & MANY MANY OTHERS REALLY MISS YA GIRL!!!! HOPE ALL IS WELL JAMMY ;);););).

Ps - Neil imfact on multiple occasions right when this problem has occurred I emailed the tech support section for AZB and gave all relevant info I could with regards to the issue multiple times and have not ever rcvs any response from anyone whatsoever so I have absolutely no idear!!!

I am so damn tired of reading posts telling people to go take lessons. I think everyone already knows that if you want to pay for lessons it will be worth your money but that's not the point of this forum, so stop with the comments about getting lessons. If someone asks an honest questions about their game and how to improve you should only respond with good advice, not recommending lessons for the 1,000,000th time...

I agree that these posts should stop. We need to get back to more important topics like "What is the best tip?", "Who makes the best cue?", "What is the best shaft?", and "How much is this cue worth?"

How happy are you to have started another lengthy thread about pool instruction?

FWIW, I believe many of us have had this experience. Now, whenever I spend a little longer writing a post, an internal egg timer goes off in me head and I automatically copy my post so I can paste it in if I've gotten kicked out. It's a pain but...
