tired of stupid college kids

so i go to a small college... where i'm lucky enough to have a gc 4x8 in the basement... granted the felt is more like carpet, its free and i'm glad to have it.... theres also an off brand 5x9 right next to it in TERRIBLE condition(rips in the felt, the rails are a half inch too LOW)

in a dorm of a couple hundred theres only about 5 of us who play all the time... with me being the guy to beat...

so the other night me and a friend are playing on the good table... nine ball for fun... and these other two guys come in whom i've never appreciated and start laughing at me and my friend when we would miss! these guys sucked a lot and they were laughing at us!

i kindly asked them if they would be so kind as to give me lessons for 10 dollars a rack.... to which they declined because i wasnt even teachable... they continued making comments towards us as i continued to try and get them to put up some cash.....

finally one of them says 'lesson number 1; never take your eye off the ball'

by now i've had enough, stop shooting, turn to my friend and say very loudly 'you know what one of the first lessons i remember was? put your money where your mouth is or shut up!'

they didnt say anything else the rest of the night....

but i would really like to get your guys advice on how to get them into a money game.....

i would feel comfortable spotting them 4 racks in a race to 5 and give them 3 balls on the break (8ball) but is that a good idea? safe enough?

again, these guys are really terrible bangers.

thanks for your input.

giving amatuer players who aren't worth a damn 4 balls off the break is the oldest hustle and it will work with a non shooter. So you can bark at them with that weight. I bet one of them will get cocky enough to take the bet.

Tony

Unless you dont like money, stay away from the spotting 4 racks to 5.

Just ignore them and continue to play the better players. Sounds like trouble trying to pounce on people like that. If they are gonna be asses in the first place, imagine what it will be like when you take money from them. IMO

Sound advice. Why do you have anything to prove to bangers anyways.

That only works if you are confident that you can run out eight balls every time.

The variation on this that I always enjoyed was "All you have to do is make the eight ball. I have to pocket all fourteen balls and the eight ball!". Opponents jump all over that. But they forget that safety's are ridiculously easy for me and its alot easier to run out like that.

My advice ignore them. The only way you will get them to play for money is with ridiculous spots.

There is more to this story then you are saying, I doubt they out of the blue just decided to pick on you.

You are not going to like giving that game.

Those guys sound like more trouble than they are worth, anyway. It is a losing proposition to get involved wth them in a$ game.

Put your pride in check and let it go...

mac, theres really nothing more to the story than what i've mentioned. i've seen these guys down there several times and their always making fun of somebody, but its normally the ping pong players(a game they also suck at) it was seeing their uncalled for comments on others that has caused me to dislike them already.

i wish i had given a reason to them to not like me... the only reason i can think of that theres nobody at college who can beat me (not saying much, its a small christian college, please dont take that as a brag)

That is where I'd leave it. Even if you get them into a game, they are going to shark and jeer until you get madder, which seems to be their goal in life.
Reminds me of some forum trolls.....

Just smile and move on

First, let me say this:
when playing bangers who have no ability to see an angle, see the out, or even make the right bridge, 4 off the table is safe. You'll be fine (if you can shoot). Spotting anyone, even a dog (and not a bad shooter; I mean a real canine) 4 games on 5 is just stupid unless you can consistently run a minimum of 5 straight racks of 8 ball.

Anyone can get lucky and if you're opponent gets lucky just once, he wins.

Give him four off the table. He'll think he;s getting a great deal. If you want to sweeten the deal a little, give him two games on the wire. Give him odds on his money to. Put up $20 to his $10 or $50 to his $25, etc. etc.

As far as what macguy said about there being more to the story, don't count on it. There are a**holes like these guys all over the place. They'll bark at anyone and for no other reason than personal insecurity. Generally, these people aren't worth your time or worth risking your money. I say walk away but if you really want to embarass them, then offer them one of the games above.

I just want to say I've had the exact opposite experience at my small college...

We only got pool tables about 1 and a half years ago, but already we have had myself go from banger to about 5/6, about 3 guys go from 4 to 5's, 8 or so guys go from bangers who didnt know the rules to solid 4's, and then a 6 and super 7 who played before the tables were around(always good for competition)

And this is a SMALL school with only two 6/7 footer(never measured but very small)(and the second is only 3 months old).

You can't get blood from a turnip!

I have a couple of apartment buildings and I rent to college kids, they are some of the dumbest things I have ever met (turnips), pay a few bucks and go to a real pool room.

Try to ignore these idiots .never spot anyone 4 games out of 5 .8 ball is also a game which involves Some luck so his luck could far out weigh his skill in a match.there are going to be many temptations in life not all have to be challenged.

I myself am young ,mid 20s but i look like im fresh out of highschool so i tend to attract alot of action from college bangers which is cool, they have given up thousands to me.If you play well enough and want to spot them then give them 2 tp 1 on everything,i used to give 6-3,the breaks, and for every ball they made they could take a ball off the table,a tough game if the guy shoots decent but if they are pure bangers then it shouldnt matter but 4 games on the wire in a race to 5 is suicide,if the table spreads wrong then bad things will happen and not to mention if you try to break out the 8 if its tied up and it goes in or scratch on the 8,you will be kicking yourself.I usually try to play even then work the spot up,thats how you get deeper in there pockets, but they might not be good losers and be more trouble then there chump change is worth.

Spot them all the breaks or something stupid...Or better yet don't spot them anything if they are that dumb the don't know what a spot is....The best way to get a wuss like that in a game is embarress them in front of people or their friends or best yet a girl friend!!!!! push the right buttons and you can get them....Once you have their cash hold it over their head to get them to play more....Nothing makes a game faster then telling someone Don't you want to get your money back.....

Then if you do beat them make sure it seems like you got lucky to win...Even if you just tell them that a few times... Aw i got lucky

On the whole everything I told you seems juvenile but when played right it will work... I may not be the best player but I am a Pro at pushing buttons:D

thanks for all the input...

and mac the other guys i play with have all just started playing last semester since they saw someboy who had a big interest in it. i sold a few of them cheap excaliburs... and two out of the 5 or 6 of them who started ran their first racks this semester... i was impressed...

haha that reminds me... one of the guys was bragging about his 'madonna' cue last week... i asked him how much it was worth and he said he said it was a hundred dollar stick.... then two days later he was mentioning how he needed some new screw on tips for it..... HAHAHAHAHA

anybody else ever seen screw ons on a hundred dollar cue?

i think he lied about the worth, but either way thats funny to me.

Just let it go man... it doesn't matter if you can beat him or not.. it's not worth it...

Look at it this way:

Those guys are sitting around having a beer and laughing about the situation and you are posting on a forum that will remind you of this situation for a couple of days...

Onemoreyouth,

I go to school in IL too and I really think these guys are not worth your time.....you've got more to lose if you keep messing with them.

If you want to know how to handle this you need to look at the best and worst case senarios.

Best case, you talk them into playing and win a few bucks. Probably 20 or less since it doesnt sound like they play regularly.

Worst case, you keep this going, they get sick of you and take you into a back alley and beat the sh#% out of you.

Is the risk worth the reward?

Woody

I say its time to turn the hustle on. Might take a while to get them to bite but, it will be all the sweeter when you reel em in.

Not sue why everybody is telling you to stay clear... I'd go for it and lay down. Keep a rivalry going. When they are watching, play a friend with the spot you want them to take and lose (having your friend return the cash, of course). After time, catch them drinking with their girl and call em out.

The last sentance I wrote is time tested...
