To get a new cue or not....

Schon best bang for the buck. I have bought 2 here under $350 an one on flea bay for $300.00. Like a new car let someone else drive it off the lot. Yes before the peanut gallery chimes in I have bought new Schons also. An any of these cues you can hand down to your grand kids.

A lot of good advice

I have read pretty much all of these posts, and the advice given is excellent. I am now going to add my opinion. If I were you, I would try to find someone with some custom cues simply so you can try them out and see exactly how they hit and who you like. Then, instead of spending 500-700 on high end production cue, spend the same amount on a custom sneaky pete or hustler. Possibly even a plane jane. I shot with a Tim Scruggs old hustler for quite some time, and that cue played lights out. Far better than any production cue I have ever hit. And an added benefit is that if you get a good cue maker, the cue will hold its value better than any production cue. I bought mine used, and not just a little used. I had a friend refinish it, and it looked beautiful. Doing it that way can save you some cash. If you like a nice solid, stiff type of hit, I can definitely reccommend a Scruggs.

Now, if you do decide to go the production route, there are some good brands out there. I have had both a Schon CX-54 and a Pechauer Pro Series as my players, and I liked them both. I liked the Schon a little more. I have played a little with Mezz cues, and I think they play awesome for a production cue. Probably the best. But there are other good brands as well, like Falcon, Joss, the new Balabushka's by Adams, and higher end McDermotts, Vikings, and Meuccis. But, as most before me have mentioned, this is all subjective to each individual. Everyone likes something different.

And I need to clear up something from an earlier post in this thread. Schon are definitely not custom cues. But, being one of a kind does not define what is a custom cue. Most custom cue makers have lines of cues. There may be some small variations, but they will make several cues that are essentially the same. If it is a one of a kind cue, somewhere in the description it will read one-of-a-kind or one-of-one cue. These cues are much more rare, hence more valuable.
Another route you could take is to go out and hit different brands of production cues, find out which one you like the best, and post a thread asking which custom maker's cues are similar to that particular brand as far as the type of hit. Then try to find a sneaky or hustler or plane jane from that cue maker that fits into your budget. I really think that is your best move if true playability is what you are after.

Sorry so long winded on this topic, but I hope it helps some.
Good luck!

Hi Nick,

Well man as your going to find out everyone has a cue brand that they prefer over another and they will bash other makers to make the one they paid for and play with sound the very best same is true about LD shafts. Truth is its no different then one person liking a ford or chevy and another liking a dodge. While others will say the only way to go is bmw and all the rest are junk and a waste of money. Same is true with pool cues. Mali is a decent American made cue. If its in good shape and you like the way it feels in your hand but want to freshin it up consider having the shaft cleaned up by a cue maker or buying an after market shaft for it. I prefer McDermotts myself just my taste and what I like. I have always played with a McDermott cue. If you want to spend a few hundred bucks (300-500) you can get a very good one with a LD shaft standard and a lifetime warranty. Oh and don't believe the BS schon are not custom cues they are production cues. Meaning they are not each one of a kind as would be implied as saying custom. I know a few people who own the same exact schon so custom not quite. Mildly produced is a more truthful statement. Good luck.

there are one of a kind schons though obviously not all or even most but they are out there. So yes there are custom schons and you can get one made so yes schons are custom sometmes as are jacoby and others. But to me a custom cue isnt one of a kind it is one you have built to your specifibations. The others are one of a kind but not custom.
best regards
Monty

stick to your mali. You stick to it and work on your game as hard as you can. two years from now you'll be sending guys with fancy south west cues home busted!

I don't have much to add but as some have said and I agree, It's the Indian not the Arrow,
But even the best Indian has a favorite bow. Happy hunting.

I guess i am the odd man out but i would go with a custom made to order with the specs you want and like in a cue. A good CM can build you what you want for the same money as a production cue but its to your specs.
Bryan Mord of BCM cues is way underrated and under priced, you could contact him and ask him what his opinion is and how much your willing to spend.
BTW with a custom you wuill probably be able to sell the cue if you tire of it for close to what you paid or even more in certain circumstances.
Go into ask the cue maker forum here and ask them. you will get all the advice you need.
