Todays Pros....

You're right. I don't even know why I'm replying.

Mention Keith's name in a negative manner, I can't help but reply. What can I say, I love the man. I know he's no angel and is most definitely the Stu Ungar of pool, but put him and another of today's emotionless robots on two tables in a big ball room, and watch which table the crowd draws near.

And as Tammy Wynette says, sometimes it's hard to be a woman, but STAND BY YOUR MAN.

It's funny that we used the same word to describe some of today's players. I hadn't seen your post until after I posted mine. Then I read yours and had to laugh, Robots, yup that about sums it up!

Why would anybody red rep TheKman? Maybe you disagree with his opinion. Maybe he is a troll, I don't know. I didn't see him hurling insults at anybody. I do see people hurling insults at him though.

Guess I have a different threshold for what deserves a red rep than everybody else....oh well.

This thread made me think of some of the more colorful players I've had the pleasure of being involved in action with. One was an older man named Raymond Miller. If I showed up at the poolroom without gambling money he would always offer to loan me a hundred if I would gamble with him and most if the time I did. Sometimes I would take his money and win but mostly I would show up on Friday to pay off lol He was smooth and loved action
He passed away a few years back but if you ever met him you would never forget him.

Yeah I don't get it either basement dweller. I even said Keith was a great player.
But no SVB IMO. And most would agree. It's a fun debate, comparing generations.
Like comparing Joe Montana to Tom Brady. Interesting debates. But don't do it in pool!
And don't ever ever disparage Keith mccready!

He is disrespectful to Jam and trolls JCIN
It has nothing to do with agreeing. I've only red repped 3 post in my AZ history. I disagree with people all the time and that's just part of it... No big deal to me. If I like their next post I'll read it and may give them a greenie.
I guess it's because I hate when people go out of their way to be disrespectful to other posters

Please explain where I disrespected anyone please?
Saying SVB would crush Mccready is disrespectful to Jam??
Not much sense there

Nevermind. Your from New York and I'm a southerner .
We don't see things the same way. Not a knock just culture differences
It's like Thaiger, he makes great points and is very sharp but he is
British ... Hence, culture clash.
I sometimes let post get under my skin and then I automatically look to see their location. I'm learning that most everyone reads a post differently

What you write, it's like saying Manny Pacquiao would crush Mohammad Ali.

Two great boxers from different eras. Manny might not have liked Ali's action when Ali was in his prime.

Can you see clearly enough to realize why the comparison you make is ridiculous?

Like comparing Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. They were all great at the pinnacle of their careers. It aint over till the fat lady sings. Life is still moving ahead. ( Thank God). Lets hit some, rack em

Beautiful Dixie triumphs in everything, to include pool.

To say one player will crush another player...well, you just don't know if it is on a bar table. You never know what is going to happen every game or every set.

Sometimes you might win and sometimes you don't. There is never a guarantee. I've beaten some real good players, not because I'm better, but because it was my time or my turn.

The better player doesn't always win.

But everyone is invited to-------->

And if you can't make it to this one, come on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving every year.

Shane has never beaten me and I doubt if I'll ever play him. But it doesn't mean I can't beat him. So far, no one has beaten me in my basement.:bash:

Exactly, Ali would kill Manny! Lol

TheKman, I think your tone does come off a little offensive and I can understand how it rubs people the wrong way. I didn't care for it myself, but the only thing that really bugged me is you took this post in a direction other than it was intended for. I was just comparing how I liked the antics of the players of years past and I wished today's players were more colorful.
I never wanted this to be about who could give who the 7, lol. Oh well you are entitled to your opinion.

EDIT: I also wanted to reiterate that with this level of player you never know. Any of them could dominate the other on any given day. If you think Keith is all washed up I think you are sadly mistaken. He may not be placing in every event but a player like that is ALWAYS a threat.

Keith gives most of the world the 5 out in character:thumbup:

Lol I agree. I bet he has had higher hi's and lower lows than most and has played the game at it's finest. Some day I hope I get a chance to play him a set of 9 ball. Even if it means I am just donating.

IMO, if you're an all-time pro in this industry.... you are up for praise, criticism, whatever.

If you think CJ's new system blows, by all means express it.
.................Earl Strickland is an ass on the table. Go for it.
.................Tascarella cues are overpriced? Yeah, me too.
.................Mike D is a sore loser. Not me.
.................Souquet is a real bore to watch. Count me in.
.................SVB will go down as the best American cueist ever- sing it sister!
.................Keith M couldn't play with SVB. Yup.

Its called a discussion. Grow some thick skin if I offended "your guy"

Getting back to discussion.
I think today's players are much better than players of 70s, 80s.
But I think those 70s, 80s players are WAYYY more entertaining.

Most entertaining for me- Mike Sigel. Best ever- Mike Sigel.
Although I think SVB will surpass him in 10 years.

I have always been taught you can tell how well you played by the amount of
Money is in your pocket when your on the way home.

Who do you think has won more money? Keith or Shane
That's how you keep score

I think everyone agrees that the overall skill level of professional pool as a whole has increased in the modern era. But, the best players of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s would be world beaters in any era.

One of the most ridiculous displays of power and skill I ever saw was Earl on the 10 footer against SVB (TAR Match). That table was *hard* and Earl made it look like child's play, in a way I don't think any other player could do. And that's just 2 or 3 years ago, not even in his prime.

Who has won more might be a better measure than who has more. Maybe one is just better at keeping a hold of it.

Keith was suspended from school as a teen for having too much money. Over fourteen thousand is how the story goes, mostly from the track IIRC.

I don't know which has won more money at the table, but I would not be a bit surprised if it was Keith. He always did like to bet high, he ain't got no dog in 'em.

"Outlandish" behavior just isn't tolerated today like it was in the past. Drunk driving laws, sexual harassment laws, public nuisance & noise laws, etc. really keep a lid on behavior...and change the way people act in a society.

Used to be that a high-school football star could do anything and get away with it. Today, they've got a target painted on their back. One wrong move and there goes the college scholarship.

As much as I enjoy Earl Strickland's game, I'd toss him out of a tournament if he caused trouble. It doesn't impress the fans (society) any more, so who needs the headache?

That said, I'd like to see more "fun" in tournaments. Let Alex joke around as long as it's not during his opponent's shot. Heck, even let Ralf Souquet crack a joke!

Getting this thread back on track, I think bdorman's post makes a good point about the nature of our society. I think we have been trying for a while now, to remove the JOY out of competition. Probably not on purpose, but it's been an indirect result of pushing our kids harder and harder. As a parent, I'm realizing how all of the sports (or academic pursuits) that our kids compete in, they are so scheduled and orchestrated. And if you want your child to actually be competitive at something later in life, they have to start really young and put in A LOT OF HOURS! There's just not as much time for spontaneity.

When is the last time you drove by a field of kids playing a game of baseball on their own? I haven't seen this since I was a kid. This isn't to say that we in the U.S. aren't generating great baseball players, it's just that now instead of just having fun and playing with their friends on their own they have to go to clinics, and indoor hitting facilities, baseball camps, and this sort of thing.

Now maybe pool in the U.S. hasn't gotten to this point, but it does sound like it's more like that internationally. While maybe I can't put my finger on it exactly, I do think this is part of what’s going on.
