Tommy Spencer

Excuse me, Jaybird. I was on one of those teams that won the national championship in Milwaukee. Abruzzo, Pawelski, Artie Bodendorfer and myself. I also came in 3rd in that same tournament with the team of Abruzzo, Pawelski, myself and Tommy Spencer!

Sorry Freddie about leaving you and Artie off the list. Abruzzo's teams changed from year to year, but they were always WINNERS!

Tom will be missed. He was a great player, and an even nicer guy. I had the privelege of spending time on the table with him and learned a great deal!!

He will be in my prayers.

Tommy Spencer looms large in my memory and I will explain. I played a very short time (76, 77, and into 78). I quit playing in September of 78 as a 24 year old, never to play seriously again. I played Tommy many times in 77 and 78 in a number of cities except Chicago. We played once in a ring game, once in a tournament, but mostly races for a price. Every time we ran into each other, we played.

I liked knowing and playing Tommy. He was the perfect opponent. He played at a good pace. He was polite. He was intelligent in conversation. He had a good sense of fairness. Tommy had guts and gamble. He played hard. There was one attribute that always stood out to me. He did not mince words. Tommy was always direct and to the point. You always knew where you were with him. He always had my respect as a human being and as a player.

Rest peacefully, Tommy.

I didn't know Tommy well but he was a helluva player & always friendly to me...RIP, Tommy.
