Tony Ellin's death

I was going through a thread about players that quit early on and Tony Ellins name got mentioned a few times.Some were wondering how he died.I heard from a pretty reliable source that he was fishing one morning and got hit by a train on the way home.Pretty bizarre if you ask me.But like I said,the guy who told me is pretty trustworthy.Anyone got any comments?

I also heard he was hit by a train. There was a rumor that one of his brothers was also hit by a train, at the very same location. Strange if true.

That is what I had always heard, that he got hit by a train.

I think that Billiards Digest did an article on him a few years ago and if I remember correctly, they said he had been hit by a train, as well.

On June 14, 2000, Tony was on his way to pick up his daughter from daycare. He was in his brand new car and came to a railroad crossing. He decided to go around the gates and was struck by the train and killed instantly.

Here is a link to an article I wrote about Tony that is posted on this website. There is not a day that goes by that I don't sit back and wonder how far he could have taken his talent.

My story about Tony is from 1991.
I was living in So. Cali and went to watch the first Bicycle Club Invitational in Bell Gardens.I was standing on the sidelines watching Tony practice and wondering who he was.He had a Powerful stroke but seemed to be a bit wild.Anyway,later on I found myself standing beside him while watching a match.I started conversing with him and he was very nice.I asked him if he had won on tour yet.He kinda looked surprised and said to me..."I just won the Akron Open recently."
Kinda funny that the article didn't mention that victory.I believe it was his first?By the way,pound for pound,I believe Tony had the best 9-ball break out there.He hit them balls HARD and controlled the cue-ball.Always pocketed a ball(or 5...LOL).He was a big boy and got ALL of that body of his into the snap.It was something to see!

Tony was the first guy to show me how to use just the shaft to jump over a ball, and he did it by placing the obstructing ball just about a half inch from the cueball. I still can't do it.

The first time I ever saw Tony play was at the Akron Open in 1992. He beat Jeff Carter in the finals for the championship.

One nice guy and one VERY good player. He is definitely missed.
