agree 100% - I can think of a couple others like Dennis Hatch & Earl but since the question was for 5.......

mike davis can get the 8 from any player listed above, and probably some more not listed. definately not a top 5 in the us, but still a fine player.

A very in-stroke Earl goes to the top of my list. The guy's unstoppable at the top of his game.

What makes a top 5 player? The answers so far seem to be top 9-ball players, but I think a top player should be more well rounded. Many of the names mentioned so far could get weight from shortstop players if the game were banks, 1-hole, billiards etc. For all around players, I might include (in no particular order) Cliff Joyner, Jason Miller, Scott Frost, Shannon Daulton, and Gabe Owen.

All around? Rotation games? Straight Pool or One Pocket?

Danny Harriman plays all the games well
John Schmidt does too
Cory Deuel the same
Johnny Archer...super man
Stevie Moore?

Hard to say but here's my take on it in no order...

Earl - Best 9 ball record in the history of the game, questionable temperament
Archer - One of best 9 ballers ever, not as successful at other games
Harriman - one of the straightest shooters, plays most games world class
Schmidt - US open winner and 400 ball runner
Deuel - most talented of all, best cue ball and break, US open winner
Davis - unorthodox but has been very consistent at many games
Morris - maybe most naturally gifted, US Open winner, IPT!
SVB - banging on the door, surely a matter of time before his gambling sessions give him an edge

yea, we need to verify what game?.....So I will go with the "all around" player...

Allen Hopkins....can play ANY game, and will gamble with ANYONE!

after that, it's a toss up of whos in stroke on any given day....and not to mention the "sleeper" players out there we have never heard of that are in pool rooms everywhere.

Forgot about Allen, first time I saw him play was last years 14.1 event. I spent most of my match with Max watching Allen play on the next table (I was getting thrashed! :p). I was very impressed despite his style with his knowledge of the game and shot making. I recall talking to Mr Lipsky about his and he said something along the lines of "Allen is scary good!"

What about Buddy, Varner past their prime prob?

I agree with you and how can you leave Earl off of a list of top 5 players in the US. Nobody plays better 9 ball than Earl, just look at the man's record....

i would say Earl is the best - i'm talking 9-ball btw.

after that i'd say Archer, Schmidt, Morris and Deuel.

on a side note, and not meaning to change tack of the thread, but for all the talk about America no longer being the dominant force in Pool, a list like this does instill a bit of confidence surely!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Denis Hatch yet, he is one of the best in my books for sure.

Earl Strickland, Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, are all players whose time has come and "gone". Moreover, I don't find Earl's antics even remotely entertaining particularly when he fouls and dosen't call it when the ref doesn't see it (Charley Williams match). I would also put Archer in this group of has beens and I find his "nit" picking annoying. Past record is not indicative of present performance after all we are not talking about "records" we're talking present day performance. The young guns of today take out these older players in 9 ball.
Corey Duell
John Schmidt
Shane Van Boening
Gabe Owen
Chris Bartram

Top five US players (in no particular order).

Johnny Archer
Rodney Morris
Earl Strickland
Corey Deuel
Alex Pagulayan (I don't care what he says! He's Canadian and that's like the 51st state anyway!)
