top canadian players

What about Mike Vidas, Brady Gollan, Alan Ima, Simon Pickering, Randy White, and Paul Potier?
I remember back in the day when Mike and I went to a tournament in Vancouver and Mike showed the guys a thing or 2 about 9 ball, and I took the girls aside and gave them a lesson. 9 ball was just catching on there, and boy did they take to it fast!
Mike brought Bernie Mikkelson down and taught him how to play one-pocket in hopes of matching him up with Harry.
John Horsfall was a huge talent, originally a snooker player, that made everything look basic, but was highly skilled.
Stan's my buddy. He told me he used to sit and watch me hold the table all night and was too intimidated to challenge me. Now look at him! He also met his girlfriend at a tournament I ran.
Frenchie is Alain Boutain. He can balance cues and chairs on his nose!
Kevin Cardinal is a sweet unassuming guy with a big game.
One of the smoothest strokes around was John Bear. He has gone to the great poolroom in the sky, but I always loved watching him play.
Larry Wilson plays good. I have gone hill-hill a couple of times with his wife Andrea and have an undefeated record with her playing her about 5-6 times.
I remember watching Alex and Tyler when they were just pups. You can always spot talent a mile away. Same for when we saw Edwin win his first big tournament.

The question at the start was who are the top 5 players I think meaning currently. Also the players I have named are known to travel to international events still.
We could have certainly mentioned Mario Morra, Jeff White and Chris Orme.
All the names listed in this thread are all great players, it just shows you how much talent we have here in Canada.

I watched some of the video of him at a canadian 9 ball tour event. He makes the game look easy which easily proves he knows a lot more than most players. I'm pretty sure he won a big pro event in atlanta before? i think it has it on his player profile on here.Brian Butler lives here in Edmonton and he plays very good pool , doesn't matter which game it is.A close friend of mine Rob Phillips would certainly do well in big events ,if circumstances were different for him so that he could make it to 9 ball events. Hes got loads of talent with any game also.

I agree and I wish all these guys travelled more to the big events like the US Open, Derby City Classic, Music City, Reno Open, or the Turning Stone!DelayedJuice said:

Danny is for sure a great player, I know he would do well in these kinds of events, too bad he doesn't go.
I haven't seen Vince Chambers mentioned, pretty sure he's Canadian and nothing but rock solid on the box every time I've seen him play.

Nah, while Frenchy was awesome on the box and I watched him torture some people in Vegas for the cash back when he was shooting so strong there is no way he would have played bar box 8-ball for big cash against Bernie Mikkelson without a spot. In fact back in the mid 90's I dont think there is anyone in Canada that wanted any of Bernie on the box and very few people wanted to try him on the 9-foots either.
I`am from Ontario,but whatever happened to Jim Fong,everyone mentioned out west is from Calgary,what about Edmonton players.BTW Danny just beat Hatch and Bucky for his second in a row Joss tour event,guess he is travelling.Salvas won`t even play Hatch for anything.Finnally when we first converted from snooker to american pool 2 players come to mind that where more advanced,Jerry the Gohst Watson and Jumpin Joe Laurence....

Rob Philips is a great player from Edmonton, he would be the best from that city and only a small step below Edwin and Tyler. He definately plays at a level can beat anyone on a given day on a bar box or a 9-foot.
Jim Fong quit it seems, have not seen him at a tourney in years. He was good but never the favorite. While he was a contender there were usually 4 or 5 players in the tournament that were favored to win over him.
Unfortunately Edmonton's pool scene seems like it might be even worse then Calgary, and that is saying something.
Speaking of Edmonton players, what happened to Benny Onyschuk? I loved watching the 'Golden Jet' play, he was smooooooth. Also, Duane Benson was a good 8-ball player from the Edmonton area. Kevin Cardinal has considerable game, and gave me some cheap lessons when I lived in Saskatoon. What about Brad Poorman? Randy LaChance? Randy was a murderous money player, when I used to see him around Saskatoon.
Benny has had some health issues in the past few years and his game is definitely showing the effects of it, in his prime though, he was a monster. Duane Benson pretty much dropped off the face of the pool earth out here many years ago, haven't seen him in ages.
Sadly the pool scene here in Edmonton is beyond dead and the lack of a real pool room doesn't help. Some of the old schoolers do come out once in a while for the occasional tournament, but as a general rule, nobody is playing much anymore. We did just have the annual Bill Ganne memorial 10 ball event though and the turnout seemed ok with Brady Gollan winning it all.
not too much going on around here nowdays, provincial 9-ball just finished up today. every year there's more and more good players missing from the draw. some of the smaller cities don't even have any pool halls.
Gotta mention Brian Butler. Not world class, but he plays tourneys and cheap pool pretty good. I think he's living in NJ now. When he was living in Atlanta, he could hang with most top players, unless the bet got high. (Hope you read this, Brian) :smile:
I had Brian in a good spot where we could have won a truckload on cash playing flyboy in Baton Rouge...We won 30r 4k bout flyboy was ready to go off but Brian being on the natural was dead tired & couldn't go no more....wih i could have slipped him a snapper we mighta won 100k...lol
Marv Adams was a decent player as well!! Didn't he used to run with Kevin for awhile?

Yup, nothing but Diet coke and pepperoni pizza for him. He played an 8 ahead set of 10 ball at the Bill Ganne memorial and he won 8 straight before his opponent pulled up citing bank machine issues. Was over so quick that most people didn't even know it had started.
Brian and I have had some great times playing pool over the years, too bad the scene here is so terrible now.
