In our desire to be good stewards of the game the organizing committee for the 2016 Toronto World 8-Ball Tournament are announcing the cancellation of that event. After awarding the event to Toronto for 2016 the WPA received an offer from a promoter in China to hold a World 8-Ball Tournament for both men and women with a prize fund for each division of $300,000 per event. While the timing of this offer could be viewed as unfortunate, this new promoter has offered to invest $3,000,000 over the next 5 years and we do not wish to hamper anyone who will make that long-term commitment to Professional Pool. We will move on and soon announce new plans for events in North America as our prize fund is still intact due to the loyalty and understanding of our sponsors.

While we had hoped to bring a major World Championship Title to the Western Hemisphere it is unreasonable for us to take a selfish world view. This new development will offer international players a handsome reward, includes both genders, and takes place in a large venue in China.*Toronto will still have a major event coming out of The Corner Bank. It has always been our intention to begin a new and exciting tradition with an annual event that will be a cornerstone of every major players’ calendar. We still intend to do just that. We are now making plans for the best avenue of competition available to us and look forward to making an announcement on our developments soon.
 
I hope that this doesn't turn out to be another event like the one that Kevin Trudeau promised. Many tournaments have ceased to exist because of conflict the attraction of a larger purse.

This is both good news and bad news. I think many were quite excited about the world championships being held in Canada. They will be disappointed but certainly getting more dollars into the purse is a good thing.

What was wrong with Trudeaus? He dumped a ton in players pockets. They wish he was still around, they may have been well off by now for some top ones.
 
I was so looking forward to attending that. However I know jim and John at Cornerbank along with Jerry will make a staple event on the pro circuit come to fruition
 
This is good for China and countries near China, but a blow to North America, as most don't have big enough sponsors to round trip to China.
 
This is bad in a huge way. No matter how hard you work to get something it can be bought by someone else. It's great someone wants to invest in the game but it should have been next year not this one.

We were told we could run the W8B for this year. But that would make no sense, to begin a tournament that you could not continue to grow, so we will make new plans for a new event. Who knows, the other promoter could still try to put one on this year, I do not know.

The new promoter isn't putting one on this year?
 
As a Torontonian I am very sad to see that there won't be a World Championship event in my back yard. However, I look forward to whatever event it is that Jim and Jerry can put together.

I assumed (wrongfully) that the new promoter bought the right on condition of a W8B this year? If not - this is a blow as we all know there are no guarantees (in life) that next years event WILL HAPPEN...
Such a shame and waste of good peoples time!

I had thought so too, It would have been nice to see the event go ahead and next year turn into a different world class event.

Why don't you guys go for the W10B since Manny is no longer doing it? :D
Qatar hosting of W9B will expire in 2017 so WPA should really synchronise and put in place the bidding process so interested parties can put their bids in instead of doing it ad hoc like W8B. They should also do same thing with the World Straight Pool 14.1

Probably too tight and not enough time for new promoter to hold it this year since it will be 2 divisions men and women's also :D

Don't mean to open a can of worms...but is there any chance of it getting back to Matchroom? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Kozoom's production, but I miss the crowds that the WPC had when hosted in Taiwan and Manila, felt so much more dramatic. They should rotate hosting from those two spots every year and I'd be happy.

So what happened to the new WPA World 8 Ball Championships that were supposed to occur next month in China? Was it downgraded and renamed the "Jinan Heritage Classic"? If you were to look it up in Google and find last year's announcement the linked page has actually been rewritten to point to this "Classic"...
