Tournament meal

What do you recommend eating to keep yourself going in a tournament? Do you eat a light but decent meal before? How about over multiple hours? Obviously, I don't want to eat a heavy meal but I find I'm running out of energy after 4-5 hours. Power bars? Crack and a Red Bull?

Carb up to stay awake, take dry roasted peanut, trail mix, or energy bar to keep alert, and drink pleanty of H2O.

beer

If you switch to beer, beer, beer don't forget the rule to aim at the cue ball in the middle. That also applies to driving or walking or talking to someone. The one in the middle is the 'real' one. Unless it's a pink elephant. Then it's the one on the left that's real.

everyone is different, but you don't wanna bonk out by eating nothing, and you can't eat a giant steak and expect to be ready either....so, I usually have a light meal 2 hours before the match....I quit all smoking and caffiene last year, sothat is out.....and I like energy bars during the event to keep from feeling like i have low blood sugar....

I think this is a very good thread. I was just having a little fun with the beer thing.

I usually start out the day with a very light breakfast. 1 cup of raisin bran with skim milk & a cup of Joe. Then only snacks until matches for the day are over. Then a nice dinner.

I think I'll try some of these! I usually settle for some peanuts or an order of fries.

Thanks CC.

Can't do the dry roasted peanuts. For some reason they tend to make me vomit uncontrollably for about 6 hours! Still, that'd be a hell of a way to shark an opponent, and everyone else in the place!!

But I don't want the nickname "Nutchucker!"

I am hypoglycemic so carbs put me in a coma. I stick to low carbs high protein (like a salad with grilled chicken) and I bring a variety of nuts and raw food bars incase I get a sudden drop in my blood sugar.

I have noticed that i have played very well in the beginning of the tournaments and have made it in the money 5 out of 7 of the tourneys i have played this year. Its usually double elimination and 30 players so its a long haul,i noticed that i would beat myself up because i would be starving, then i would eat maybe an order of fries and then im full but am playing 2 balls below my speed, its very dicouraging when im steamrolling and run out of gas.

When I drove OTR (over the road) I always has Corn-nuts, and Hershey's Kisses with Almonds for that last minute boost of energy before i fell asleep and crashed. Found out the combination gave me about 30 minute of wake time. Might have saved my life once or twice when I was real tired. Marathon runner do a carb load the day before a race, like Pasta, and more pasta that in the old days we called Spaegitti.

I've never driven for a living, but my customers recommend a Hershey's Dark and a large coffee! It works pretty good until you build up a caffeine tolerance!! :D

I used to race mountain bikes and we would have a pasta dinner the night before, pancake breakfast and lots of water. Then during the race, goo paks & water only. Maybe this could work for pool tournaments too!:D

Have a look at the Weight Watchers recommendations. It's important to keep your body hydrated, and water is best for that. Aside from hydration, you need to keep your blood saturated with glucose.

Having just a glass of coke is good to get your bloodlevels up because it gets assimilated very fast. Some fruits will be great to keep the level for a longer time. Fries and other junkfood are not that great, as your body gastrointestinal system will take a while to crack it up - and even if it manages, the fat will not reach your muscles or brain, instead it will stay at hip-level ;)

I highly recommend to learn to play on a full stomach & learn too play and eat at the same time. I always eat right before I come to the pool room, why? Because so many small venue events you can NEVER predict when your match will be, even tho they say it will be so&so hours from now. There are so many factors that can and will change the order of play in amateur events I would not risk my time effort and money getting there and then only loose because I should of eaten or such, carry your favorite candy bar in your case for emergency backup. Hope this helps

A candy bar is a nice idea if you don't have much time to kill 'till you are completely finished. Chocolate will put a lot of glucose into your blood, but your body will react to this and kill it equally fast, resulting in another drop after a relatively short time. Having some fruits is better in the long run, as the glucose in your blood will not peak as fast, but rise a little slower and decline much slower. You will perform best with a constant level of glucose in your body. Don't confuse this with that a runner does - they will put loads of sugar into their body, but they need to do this every 5 or 10km, as they tend to burn it equally fast.

Have fun,

Detlev
