What is the most TOXIC, I heard Cocobolo, and Purpleheart on on the top of the list. Don't breathe the dust.

Any wood dust is bad to breathe, even phenolic dust. I haven't heard that purpleheart was that bad, but I agree with the coco.

I heard a lot of the Old Time Cuebuilders before this information about TOXIC DUST was know are now suffering because they did not MASK UP when working in the shop.

all Rosewoods including Cocobolo being the worst.Cocobolo smells great, spicy cinnamon like smell but like a flower until you get a real good whiff of it and then it overpowers you.

i wear a mask for most of the exotics and all the Rosewoods for major cutting sessionslike on a table saw or band saw,but on the lathe i just try not to breathe.

i did get sensitized by Rosewood my first month cutting wood on the table saw,i cut up bunches of squares without a mask(thought i was too tough for some wood)and for 2-3 weeks i had hundreds of red welts all over my body.they didn't really itch, but they were kind of painful.

there are other woods too that will get you and you can find a list of them if you google it.

Too my knowledge I didn't think i was allegic to anything... but cocobolo dust changed that forever !

I break out in a topical rash all over my inner arms, cheeks and forehead whenever I cut or sand that wood and it lasts for 2-3 weeks and NOTHING gets rid of it that I have found yet...

And from what I have learned about cocobolo wood is that the dust contains poison that will effect the lungs and can cause severe longterm health issues if a tolerance isn't built up torward it !!!

By far it is the nastiest wood I have ever worked with and wood rather have my equipment and myself stained black from EBONY and tolerate that ungodly odor than work with cocbolo at all....

But unfortunately I'm in the customer service industry and if they want cocobolo then that's what they get !

Oh well, cuemaking can't be all fun... it has to have it's drawbacks or everyone would be a cuemaker !!!!!

even though i get the rash too,i still like Coco better.the Ebony really burns my nose for some reason.

I switched to 3M respirator.
Those foam dust masks don't work.

I have the full face respirator that I wear when working with Cocobolo. Doesn't help. I have two cues going with Cocobolo. When I'm done with them, I'm done with that wood. It's a shame. I have a lot of it and it's one of my favorites.

i just try to stay away from it when it is being cut and try to hold my breath a little.the one time it got me,i breathed in a ton of it and a bunch of other Rosewoods.i actually think what got me was teh Madagascar Rosewood, but i can't say for sure.

it is kind of like food poisoning when you get sick you kind of get the idea which item of food got you,but it is hard to prove.

i know when i blew my nose that day after sawing what came out was beet red.:sorry:

Air filtration system. Two box fans with furnice filters attached to the back of them will grab alot of the ambiant dust in your shop.
