Trick Shot Magic

I also agree that there's a lot of difference between performing in competition and showing edited clips on utube, but that kid is really amazing.:p

Hopefully people will soon start realizing that Florian is more than just Youtube videos. After all, he just flew to the States and won the Artistic Cup in MO last night.

Hey Nathan! We just got back home from the Cup event, a few minutes ago. It was a great event and we hope it will be in the same location, next year. We really enjoyed it. I took almost 600 pictures!

Yes, Florian DID win the Cup in the event. In fact, he was even drinking beer out of that cup a while after the awards were given out. I believe he said he's now headed to California? He's a busy young man, nowadays!

Congratulations to

Florian "Venom" Kohler - 1st Place
J. R. "Daddy-O" Owens - 2nd Place

And, to all the rest of the guys who really put their heart into their competition! We're looking forward to next year's event!

I am not going to read this thread it is already too negative, I could tell by the title lines...Let me just say one thing about it...Speed Pool is filled with guys trying to grow our sport any way they can.

Negativity is necessary, but how about suggest to us how we can fix it. Make it a better show why just put it down...put it down then give an idea on how to make it better how about that???

Nothing every gets fixed without being broken...oops wrong thread but same post.

Are there parameters in which the shots have to fall? In other words doing shots under the leg as an example does not have much to do with the actual shot. For example, suppose I entered and added walking around the table once on your hands as a part of every shot. I would for sure win every challenge shot. Just adding things you may be able to do that may have nothing to do with pool, that someone else can't do does not make you a champion. You get what I mean. I am curious how far a player can go in their demands on their challenge shots?

I don't know the rules, I declined the invitation to be on TSM. Later said I would, but I guess they found someone else.

I will agree that it is not perfect there can be huge improvements made. But like I said before there is no real reason to just put them down why not try to make them better so that you might like it later???

Trick shots are a great pass time for people at their homes, but normally people do not go to pool halls to do them, I suspect the crowds make them very timid.

Thats not surprising ,
i wonder who he competed against(no one worth noting most likely), I already know your gonna SUPPORT him, cause hes not only $-Bank-$ for you, hes also your buddy(seen you two holding hands down the Valley:eek:)..

Now the game was set a certain way, long before florian came with his version of artistic pool, WHY SHOULD THE RULES BE CHANGED FOR HIM ?!?!
Once he proves himself UNDER THE RULES THAT THE REST OF THE PRO ARTISTIC PLAYERS have, Then he will be able to set the table to his preference .. Right now hes a rookie, perhaps not on a amateur level, but as a Pro, "NO HARDWARE", until of course the artistic pool challenge of MO. last night, which he won( im fairly sure no one worth noting was there)..;)

He still only has 1 Baby size title ,and that dont make him the best Young Nate, like I said your boy got aways to go before hes as successful as the Players Posted in my original post.

For the Record,, I love Venoms Display of Trick shots,, Hes innovative, and very entertaining.

But you gotta give Credit to the players that paved the way, especially those players who continue to Build.

I havent met him yet, i look forward to meeting him someday and making sure those video's are real. :p;)

The one thing that Mike will awalys be the best at is throwing the rock on the the box and making it hook 90 degrees, his hand strength and size is why he will awalys be the best at it.

For the record,

That puny little event you named just so happens to be an ANNUAL CUP EVENT put on by Tom "Dr. Cue" Rossman (with a LONG sponsorship list) that happens in different locations, every year. But, you OBVIOUSLY have no clue what you're talking about, or you would have known that AND you would have known that there were some very good and very well known players there AND you would have also watched it on the livestream that was produced.

The fact you seem to know nothing of all these things absolutely convinces me that you are only on here to stir up trouble. Go back into your little, dark hole in the ground and stay there. We want none of your agitating jibberish!

Hey Fatboy,

Florian has definitely been putting in a lot of practice time. He's dedicated to being able to compete and back up his name. He's a very nice, very cheerful young man and I'm sure you'd be very glad you met him. We are.

Why is it necessary that Florian be consistent at executing setup shots from an old book, when they clearly don't interest him? Sure, he competes in two of these events each year now, but they pale in comparison to creating his own new shots.

For some reason most people seem to think that a trickshot artist is measured by his ability to reproduce shots from an old book. According to that logic, the best traditional artists should be those who can duplicate other famous works of art. Oddly enough, in the real world, those people aren't called artists, they're called frauds.

(I'm in no way calling any of the players frauds, as even Florian 'borrows' ideas from other players. I'm merely voicing an observation.)

Anyway, I just feel it's a shame that the current format benefits only repetition. I for one feel the format needs to be changed to further support the creative player.

Then again, look at Semih Sayginer. He's ten times more famous than Andy Segal, and yet never really pursued formal trickshot competitions to the same extent that Andy or Mike did in their prime. I have no doubt that Florian will reach a similar status, regardless if he continues to compete professionally.

Hey Nathan! I bought a video from Florian at the Cup event and just got to watch it, last night. I like how you did it. It would be hard to do it in any other fashion.

As for the competition, if you wish the artists to be able to be creative, the shots need to be tested for skill level to give points. Otherwise, it would probably work best to have an artistic performance competition, where each person performs a mini show and they are voted on (by the crowd?) with a point system, maybe for creativity, clean execution of shots, entertainment value, etc..

Personally, I enjoy watching new shots being added to the list, but each player having a good deal of time to learn the shots, before they have to test them. It's like competing in 8 ball or 9 ball. You don't go to Vegas to play your first games ever. You get good at it, then you go test your skill against others who are good at it and can do what you can do. The idea is to see who can do it best.

Im a little late with this one but I just read every post.

Although doing trick shots is entirely diffrent than any other game they should still be respected by any pool player in my opinion.

All players have a certain game they love to play so it should be left at that.

When you see a billiard promotional video for certain players and events, what is included in it, normal shots and some TRICK SHOTS. Its entertainment!

I think the OP's attitude is the worst thing ever for pool! I love everything about pool and have tried every game I could. I tried speed pool even though I don't care for it or watch it but to say it is the worst thing to happen to pool is just plain stupid. You don't like it, turn the channel! I have no one watching me when I run a rack except my opponent. When I bust out my first three trick shots, I always have a small audience of players and drinkers. Lighten up dude.

I play pool pretty well and I shoot trick shots pretty well.

I think the game is great fun for the winner/ and fans of pool. Trick shots are great fun for everyone.

Trick shots are all offense, and pool is strategy mixed with offense. Each measures it's own skill set. I love every game within the entire spectrum of cue sports even bumper pool.

Try suggesting an idea how to make our sport more popular instead of ripping apart the people that are trying their own way of helping. (whether you agree or not) All the trick shot people are doing is trying to help.. They do not think they are better they do not think they have more to offer. MOST just want to see pool be the biggest, and greatest sport on earth.

Think about what I just wrote next time you watch a trick shot player shoot. They are just trying to help...

You are too modest Jami.

If people had the opportunity to look past what they like or dislike, they may see that all of these 'sideshow' games have merit in their own right. The people who present these exhibitions like yourself, Tarzan, Dr Cue, Venom, Ginger Wiz and a number of others...do it because you love the game.

I have watched you all and I know that when you see the look of astoundment on the faces of an audience member, the smile on your own faces from bringing something otherwise new to them - is priceless. It makes all the effort you put in worthwhile.
If you get paid it is a bonus for being good at what you do.

Every player at some time or other has set up a shot to try and make it. If they had not seen somebody do it first, they would not try it themself. Without people pushing the game from EVERY angle it would surely stagnate and die.

Pool is a circus at best. If you went to the circus and saw dogs walking on balls, an elephant standing on its back legs and a guy swinging on a rope...you would ask...is this all there is?
The sideshow completes the package! ;)
