I haven't seen that big of a difference in how tall the tips are either. I've seen only very slight differences in height throughout any given box. I bought enough boxes that I would have to say It's atleast somewhat unusual.
The question about the tip coming loose from the pad. My experiences are about the same as Dale mentioned. The old champions, when I could still get them, were bad about that, but I don't seem to have any of those problems with the triumph tips. In all fairness though, the last time I had any of the champions was when I was in My early 20's, and so I was more then likely still doing tips practically by hand other then having a wood lathe for cleaning. Anyway, doing them By hand may have created some of the backer issues. In My case when they popped off, usually the backer stayed on the ferrule, so I glued the tip back on and they were usually good to go after that.
The hit I like But I aggree the champions were better. Even when I was in My twenties they started getting harder to find though.
I used a triumph for a while as a backup to a moori, and I like them for a harder hitting tip. I have one on one of My extra shafts that I shoot with ocasionally. I originally tried the triumphs out because, as mentioned, They reminded me of how the champions looked. Not the same no, but hit was good enough that I didn't regret trying them, and have carried them ever since.
Back then, To Me, the champions were what the mooris are to some people now. It was the tip, that If I could get My hands on one, I preffered to use. There are alot of tips out there today that all work about the same for Me. I may have 3,4 choices of brands for when I'm in the mood for hard tips, or If I want to soften the hit of a cue up some there may be that many choices for a medium tip that work for My game. That's just the ones I have personally played with, there are many more choices then that.
