Triumph tips

I switched over to Triumph tips from Moori 'M' tips a little over a year ago and love them on my OB shafts. I was buying them 3 at a time on eBay and decided to just buy a box and save some $. After getting the box I noticed at least 50% of them were shorter in height and not really useable. Is this pretty common with bulk tips in general? I've heard of cuemakers having to hand pick tips and just accept the rest as a loss or for house sticks. The seller is extremely reputable and I'm sure the tips just came from the factory like this. Thanks in advance for your time.

I have personnally used these for years. I have bought several boxes and they all have been the same in size. This is odd to hear, I like these tips ans like them much better than the moori's due to there playability.
Your best bet would be to buy them from Prather's. I have purchsed them for years thru them and have been uniform in thickness and high quality every time.
I believe this to be an isolated experience in my opinion.
Thanx,
Jim Lee

have you guys had a problem with the tip coming off the fiber backing? is it possible to remove the fiber pad?

Piece of cake.

Never heard of a problem of Tris comming off the pad.
Although they are not nearly the quality of the Champion,
which they copied, they are glued to the pad much better

Champion tips basicly will not stay on the pad. I glue them on
the shaft then remove the tip with a razor blade and re-glue
the tip to the pad<much easier and more simple than it sounds>.

If you want no pad, you could do the same thing, just glue
the pad to a scrap dowel. etc.

I haven't seen that big of a difference in how tall the tips are either. I've seen only very slight differences in height throughout any given box. I bought enough boxes that I would have to say It's atleast somewhat unusual.

The question about the tip coming loose from the pad. My experiences are about the same as Dale mentioned. The old champions, when I could still get them, were bad about that, but I don't seem to have any of those problems with the triumph tips. In all fairness though, the last time I had any of the champions was when I was in My early 20's, and so I was more then likely still doing tips practically by hand other then having a wood lathe for cleaning. Anyway, doing them By hand may have created some of the backer issues. In My case when they popped off, usually the backer stayed on the ferrule, so I glued the tip back on and they were usually good to go after that.

The hit I like But I aggree the champions were better. Even when I was in My twenties they started getting harder to find though.

I used a triumph for a while as a backup to a moori, and I like them for a harder hitting tip. I have one on one of My extra shafts that I shoot with ocasionally. I originally tried the triumphs out because, as mentioned, They reminded me of how the champions looked. Not the same no, but hit was good enough that I didn't regret trying them, and have carried them ever since.

Back then, To Me, the champions were what the mooris are to some people now. It was the tip, that If I could get My hands on one, I preffered to use. There are alot of tips out there today that all work about the same for Me. I may have 3,4 choices of brands for when I'm in the mood for hard tips, or If I want to soften the hit of a cue up some there may be that many choices for a medium tip that work for My game. That's just the ones I have personally played with, there are many more choices then that.:)

Thanks guys for all the replies and info. I'll have to try another supplier and see if I get better results. I'll give Prather a try.

I've never had a problem with the pad seperating from the tip.

They always seemed to come off the backing. I discontinued them for that reason. Also there are just much better tips on the market for the money!!!

No need to feel guilty - I alwas used a lathe to work the Champs
and they still hopped off like popcorn.

One last incident of crawling around under a pool table,
I felt the tip was worth more than the wear-and-tear on my knees,
to retreive a Champ and muttering what a pain in the a$$ it
was going to be to align an already trimmed and shaped tip,
convinced me to ALWAYS slice them off the pad and re-glue.

From the if-it-doesn't-kill-you-it-makes-you-stronger files,
that experience also sold me on the idea of making a gizmo
to hold the tip 'perfectly' centered on the shaft - still use
it to this day.

If you want some more of the old, real deal, French Champions,
let me know.

Comming off the pad:
Just for fun - are you talking about Champions or Triumphs?

Had a lot of these tips come off the pad over the years, looks like they used a rubber glue to put them on.

Alot of the bar players use them in my area.

LOL, Yeah those were the days;) I've chased a couple of those runaway champs.:D Funny how they always seemed to roll right under the table where It was the darkest, and hard to spot them. I don't really have any personal tips pop off that I need to chase down these days, but They were a pain to recenter without glueing Your fingers to the ferrule & tip, I just used whatever I had that worked, even if only to roll/wrap a card or something accross the bottom half of the ferrule and tip. Knowing the tips being bad for that, I'd probably seperate them before installing now days as You recomended.

The triumph's I'm not sure what to make of reports of the backers coming loose. I'm sure I've had atleast one seperate at some point, but I can barely even put that one to memory right now, so I'm fairly sure I have'nt had any kind of epidemic breakout or anything. I'm real carefull about only feeding towards the ferrule with My manual tool though, not sure if that makes a difference, but the only cuts I take in the opposite direction are with the razor. I know all too well that anyone can get a bad batch of tips though, And have no dought that some tips may bond better to the backers then others do.

Thanks for the offer Dale, Nice to know someone has them, just incase I end up in need.:)

Suppliers just get what Tweeten sends them in the box that you get. One supplier doesn't get BETTER qualtiy than another...JER

In response to that last question the answer is Triumph tips were poping off of the backing. And like I said earlier there are much better tips for the money.
