TS Cue - Price Check, Aisle 5 !!!

Morning, y'all.

I'm on the road for work, and brought this bad boy with me. Haven't had a chance to hit a pool hall ..and likely won't, for the rest of my stay.

What I CAN do, is possibly pick up a nice Marfione Custom OTF (I'm a knife guy)...so it got me to thinking that I may be inclined to sell my TS cue, and snag that blade.

This cue has been fully refinished, rewrapped, and re-tipped by Scot at Proficient Billiards. I have the receipt to go with it.

Specs of the cue, before the refurb, are:

Butt - 15.10oz, linen wrap (removed old, beat-up leather), appears to be a late 70s (or early 80s) 4-pointer..based on the cap stamp.

Shaft 1 - 12.85mm, 3.85oz, Nat, Triangle tip

Shaft 2 - 13.15mm, 4.15oz, LBM, Triangle tip

Looking to see what FMV would be. Don't wanna undercut myself (obviously), but also don't wanna overshoot and waste people's time.

Yes....I know I could go the $1 and no reserve route on E-bay...but that's a PITA, and I've got enough stress in my life, already. 😁

Nice stick Mark, I'll guess $1,600 to $2,000 in this week's rendition of The Price Is Right. Might go higher to a TS collector...

Mike, I think you are a too high on the price range estimate. This cue is a very simple a design.
Even though it was made by Tim, it just doesn’t command that high a price at the top end and
the bottom price rung should be more like $1800 and top end closer to $2200. It just doesn’t
have the lift to ask $2700 despite being a TS cue. Let’s see how others view its likely value.
 
Is everything straight together and apart? If so I’ll offer a trade of both below:

1. Not trying to work a deal in this thread, sir. Just trying sort out the left/right limits, WRT value of the cue, right now.

2. I appreciate the thought and offer. Sincerely. But I already have both of those models, anyway! 😁😁

I added to the value bc it is in new condition - completely refinished - Proficient refinish with shipping to and from is running $350 total now. Probably sell on the lower end at $2000 or so - agreed
 
I think $1800 is the right price, market wise. You can have one w a F instead of a Ts for half.
 
Much appreciated to everyone who has offered their opinions.

So far...it sounds like $2k (including shipping, insurance, and PayPal G&S fees) isn't outside the realm of reasonable.

I figure that'll let me clear the $1800 I'm inclined to drop on that sexy-as-hell Marfione.
 
The guys have you on the right track, Mark. I am a TS collector/enthusiast and with it being in such nice shape but absent any inlays or veneers, I feel $2k + or - $200 is the correct number.

I hit up Scot, at Proficient Billiards. He didn't recall this specific cue...but stated that almost all wrapped 4-point with veneers cues weren't full spliced. The non-veneered 4-point wrapped cues weren't "common."

But this one very well might be.

I should have asked for him to let me know, when he took on the work, last fall.

Lesson learned.

I hope that's a really nice knife you're going after. Bottom line is you've got a Scruggs that probly hits very well and will appreciate every year you own it, within reason. Not so familiar w knives. Make sure that ol gal goes to a good home and not to some jerk who'll leave it in his wife's trunk.
They ain't making any more of them. Lol.😂

Generally speaking....custom knives aren't that different from custom cues. Serious collectors/hobbyists drive the market...and sky's the limit when it comes to values.

Yes....the knife I'm after is exceptional, and very, very rare.

That is a matter of personal choice- of course a cue owned and played by a great player, or a vintage cue from a very respected maker, if in great original condition commands the higher price and would be " spoiled" by a refinish. Same goes with many types of antique/ vintage higher end items.
However, lots of buyers, like me, when looking at vintage cues, don't necessarily want a cue with a worn finish, frayed wrap, stained ferrules, etc. I happen to like most of my cues to look newer in every way, even with cue playability being high the the forefront of my reason to buy/collect cues.
This TS, a four pointer, no inlays, no veneers, probably plays great, and if I were looking, I would view the Proficient refinish as a plus, and something that I would have done myself if I acquired the cue in less than excellent condition. My views on refinish aside; not everyone buys/ collects cues with resale at top of mind- I would buy a cue; if the price is within reason, because I like it for various reasons, and if I want it to look a certain way, not worried about someone who might not agree with my decision- I'm not alone on this as far as cues go.
