Going to agree with Nathan...

Its bad when Famke in a movie cant save it...

Its worse when a movie with Famke AND Pool cant save it...

Save the time and do the following

1. Go to kitchen
2. Find heavy skillet
3.Repeatedly smash skillet to forehead until numbness or unconsciousness
4. Enjoy the same feeling as watching the movie in far less time.

Just watched this movie last night and I agree!

This movie is available for steaming on netflx along with The Hustler, and Pool Hall Junkies.

I've watched all three in the last month, and I gotta say I wish I hadn't bothered with Turn the River. It's not so much a pool movie as a movie with pool in it that happens to be set around a pool hall, and it's not that great a movie.

Mars Callahan, the producer and co-star of Pool Hall Junkies just went deep (very deep, last 100+ players), in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker. I think he won 64K.

I heard that he wasn't doing so well health wise. Despite all the hate here,
I predict PHJ will become a classic.

Agreed. The pool community always talks down on PHJ (as they do with everything else pool related), but I honestly very much enjoy this movie. Sure, it's full of bad acting, technical errors, and the pool playing is often ridiculous, but at the end of the day it's supposed to be simple entertainment. It's a fun movie that people over analyze. Those who do are missing the point, and a great movie.

Who doesn't like PHJ? Like, seriously, I've never met anyone who doesn't like it. Is there a thread I missed somewhere?

While we're on the subject, what other pool-focused movies are there?

The Hustler,
The Color of Money,
Pool Hall Junkies,
Turn the River (unfortunately)...

What else is there?

Strangely, I listed them in order of production, and I'm pretty sure I got them in order of quality, too.

FWIW, people here on AZ hate Shooting Gallery even more than Pool Hall Junkies. What do you expect from a crowd praise and fondly remembers watching The Hustler in theaters, a movie that came out nearly 50 years ago.

Oh wow. Yeah, it's REALLY not well liked at all on here.

Those who don't like it can't simply say "Meh, didnt care for it". Instead they have to bash it as if they're defending some sort of personal attack upon themselves. :p

haha, thanks! that was an awesome thread. I even agree with most people's criticisms, I just don't think they're enough to make the movie bad.

I think PHJ came out around the same time as Rounders (same kind of movie, but about poker), or at least I watched them around the same time, and they both kinda hit me in the same part of my head, and that part of my head likes that kind of movie. I dunno. It worked for me.

Lates.

I'm actually being a little bit hypocritical here, as I'm not a fan of Turn The River. I however respect the effort put into it...I simply didn't enjoy the result.

I think the reason I much prefer PHJ over the others is that it didn't take itself too seriously. It was meant to be fun, which lets me look past the movies oversights.

Don't get me wrong, the Hustler is by far the best, but I'm referring to the more modern pool movies at the moment. :)

The only part that really bothered me in PHJ was when he "bought" the extra shot at the end. I still enjoyed it though. Fun movie

If the producers of Turn the River were interested in creating a fun movie, they would have dumbed down the script and stay away from the emotional development.

Poolhall Junkies is much better at keeping a movie simple, full of great emotional scenes people can relate to.

Turn the River was a little too introspective (if it was meant to be a popular movie). PHJ was all about character conflict, (girlfriend conflict, brother conflict, ex-backer conflict, pool career conflict,...).

I rented Turn the River from the local library, lol.

Wasn't great, but not as bad IMO as most here are claiming. Guess I'm in the minority, though...same as thinking that Color of Money isn't that great a movie either. Love Newman and seeing the pros in it, but overall that movie is some cheese whiz from the 80's.

Baltimore Bullet, and The Baron and the Kid are another couple of pool movies. Never seen them, so I'll spare you any review.

Baltimore Bullet is another fun movie. Also Jim Rempe, Steve Mizerak, and Willie Mosconi were in the movie playing pool players.

Not sure if they got the DVD copyright settled. Last time I checked, it was only available as a region 2 DVD, so its not officially re-released in the US.
