I still have to post the photos from the finals. There are some good ones in there with the racking disputes. But even I would have been lost in the sequencing ha ha, too many disputes to keep track of :grin-square:

A few years ago I had a friend who lived in Syracuse. Every summer I and another friend of mine, who lives in New Hampshire, would visit him for two or three days. Two people who have less to do with pool you could hardly imagine, the one being an Episcopal priest and the other a teacher of French and Spanish at a posh boarding school in NH. I talked them into taking a couple of hours to go over to Turning Stone and letting me watch some pool. To my surprise, they were both delighted and surprised by the quality of the event. If you want to give someone who is a non-pool person a positive image of pool, take him to the TS.

I'm a Midwesterner, and I think of Mike Zuglan's tournament as the East Coast equivalent of the DCC, but with much more comfortable seating.

I absolutely agree with you on this post. The best thing about the Turning Stone is the casual entrance of completely new blood to the pool world. You can see them come in out of curiosity and then sit down, very much engaged in the tournament atmosphere and the professional players playing in professional attire (collar shirt, dress pants, shoes).

In fact, I got into a conversation with a newly retired gentlemen who is into golf, and he stumbled across this tournament because he was at the Casino for this weekend. He actually came back and stayed almost the entire day Saturday and for the finals on Sunday - completely intrigued that pool has such a format and conduct. He even asked where the nearest pool halls are and is ready to go back to the game (having played in college some). He was really serious, ready to toss the clubs and pick up a cue. awesome!

There is a lot of good that comes from this tournament in terms of public relations for the sport.

If I had the money and resources, I would have a PR firm take this event under its wing and get every news outlet in the area reporting on it. Get the governor here for Pete's sake! You have the absolute best players in the world in your state for 4 days representing a sport played around the world. There is definitely more that can be done and should be done in promoting this event as the major that it is.

In my opinion US Open, Derby City, Turning Stone Classic are top 3 majors for the USA.

Day 4 - Final Day

In case anyone was interested, here are the photos of the final day - Day 4 of the Turning Stone Classic XXIV.

Like an amateur photog, my battery ran out of juice towards the final matches (and I didn't bring another one) so I didn't get as much as I wanted.

Thanx for the pix, sir.
I especially like the one with DannyD and Shaw...
....Danny looks like the perfect grandpa.

Thank you , your photos really gave a feel for the event. This looks like a perfect tournament to watch Top tier Pool. Any insight or recommendations on where to stay?

I'm glad the photos could show you just what this tournament has to offer.

Aside from the rooms at the Turning Stone itself (which can get pricey), there are new hotels just built around the casino in Verona, NY....Fairfield Inn, La Quinta Inn, etc.

But those can get pricey on weekends by piggy backing on the demand for casino patrons.

My suggestion is to go to priceline.com or another hotel booking/bidding site, and grab a 3-4 night deal on a hotel in Syracuse, ny. You'd be surprised (especially in January for the next turning stone classic) how little you can get a room for in a really nice hotel in Syracuse by utilizing the online bidding sites.

Let's face it, you won't be at the hotel room very much, you'll be at the casino at the event, where there are restaurants and anything to get what you need to make it through the day. You just need a place to stay the night before it's off to the tournament again. So why pay a ton?

Syracuse hotels off the thruway are only 20 minutes away, which isn't a bad trade-off for saving a few hundred dollars. So if you have access to a car, that's the best route to go.

Yes, PT- when Danny D enters the building everyone is all smiles. Since he lives in Buffalo, he usually makes the trip out for Saturday/Sunday. His presence in the arena really can't be put into words. The commentators become more alive and animated for the stream too.

I always love how he floats around the place, sometimes commentating, sometimes sitting high above the action in the top row watching matches, or walking here and there.

A couple of years ago, Earl was playing there, up against an important rack and he was just talking and carrying on (in classic earl fashion), The crowd was holding their breath silent, and Danny is walking by, not missing a beat- "oh Earl, shut up and shoot". The crowd and even Earl erupt in laughter. Those are the moments Danny brings to this tournament.

To get Jayson, his daughter, and Danny in the same frame was awesome. Danny was the ultimate pool grandpa. There is a generational aspect to the photo which is wonderful-old school with new school with future school (no doubt) pool excellence.

Gotta love it.
