Twilight Zone "A game of pool"

re: the rule bending - the score was 299 to 299, and klugman miscues and doesn't hit the last ball on the table. he should have lost a point for the foul, bringing him down to 298. when he pocketed the last ball on the table for the "win" he only had 299.

I hadn't seen this episode in awhile and have to admit it was pretty lame. We can all be nostalgic because it was actually about pool, but couldn't they have done just a little better? I mean, even the last shot was a completely different length shot than what it appeared to be originally. There is a person who is supposed to maintain "continuity" from one edit to another, and didn't bother with details like that.

Did you notice how amateurish Jonathan Winters looked when he was jacked up on the rail? I winced when I saw that.

You're right! Nice catch. I was also wondering how the length of the game was determined --- there was no discussion of it in the opening sequence.

I loved the episode. Just like in "The Hustler," the theme was that being the best at anything a) requires some sacrifices, and b) means having to prove it over and over. As far as I'm concerned, the message was well delivered by two fine actors.
 
I liked that oneliner Johnathan Winters uses at the beginning:

"You like to play with fire but you can't cook"

I noticed that too, but the cue ball did travel out of the frame where it is possible that it contacted an object ball and drove something to the rail. Not likely but possible.

One point that nobody mentioned was that on the last ball where they didn't use the 15 as the break ball, the initial view of that showed the cue ball to be in the rack and therefore he should have been shooting from the kitchen.
 
Also, were they in heaven or hell awaiting their next assignment? It looked like hell to me since all of the object balls looked identical.

the only object ball on the table was hanging near the pocket.
 
Very true..."Fats" sure didn't LOOK like the champ that he was supposed to be. At least Klugman's bridge and stroke were decent enough to at least look like a real player.

Anyone notice they are both using Martin cues? It would make sense the era they made it and it was most likely made in Cal. You can clearly see them on HDtv. When Winters takes the cue apart in the last scene you can clearly see the big screw as well. It is amazing what you can see now on HD. Mine is a 54 inch and it is like they are in the room live.
 
YEAH and I noticed Winters' cue looks like a 4 point ebony and wonder how much would that be worth today!!
 
how about winters' alligator case? can anyone identify that? it was a damn good looking case, even my wife noticed it before i said a word about it.

Your very welcome, and yeah I agree the quality of the video is A++. I had already seen it a few times but the quality of that video was so good, I watched it again.
