It is great to have more suppliers providing these materials. In these hard times a good deal is really appreciated.

This is a matter of opinion! The cheaper these lathes get the less others are worth. For an example the Deluxe lathe from Chris. The re-sale value will have dropped quite a bit as these newer knock offs come out. Is this good for the buisness yes or no? Does this help out suppliers like Chris Hightower? I would say no. He may sell some small parts to these people but will not make enough to continue making his quality products in the future. And as the big picture goes, these knock offs are actually coping Taig products. It will not be long when Taig is out of the picture along with Chris. Not sure about the rest of you but I would rather Chris stay in buisness as he has always been good for the buisness.

I for one would have more respect for the person or buisness that came out with a new lathe that came from an original idea. The best price isn't always the best thing for buisness.

Jim.

i think everyone acknowaldges chris as the top of the food chain in the cue machinery buisness.....but not everyone can afford to buy from him in these times....and chris has some things going for his equipment as far as quailty of materials and presision that is hard if not impossible to duplicate without great cost.....but some people such as myself are interested in desgining a machine suited to their need....the idea of being able to customize a lathe for each different builder is a good one......and taig wont go out of buisness...lol.....where would we get our parts...lol.....they are loving it....I talked to someone over there a few months ago about it....taig orders or makes the dovetails and u channel in huge bundles and only sells to chris....but every other part is comeing straight from taig......in these times the little guys need all the breaks he can get.....all the well know well etablished cue makers can afford cnc and such....hell everyone is getting them but what about us guys who start out at the bottom and have to sratch and claw just to get deccent machines....hell I started with a wood lathe for god sakes..........all this is just my opionion......but there you have it

I am not knocking anyone here.
Competition is suppose to be a good thing.
I was not aware that it doesn't apply to cue building machine parts. I will say that I like Hightower's headstock with the 1/2 hp motor with the stepper pulley better than the variable speed controlled units that have been popping up, it seems to have alot more torque.
I like to save money when I can on some of the basic parts, after all I like to eat too.

Hi,

Markets are always right, people are wrong! If someone can build better mouse trap for a better price and make a profit, that is what it is all about.

Chris Hightower is the trailblazer in this area and his reputation is solid. He will lose some sales to some newcomers but his core customers will stay with him because he is the main man.

When I first got into cue repair I was going to buy a deluxe and Chris told me I was 12th on the list and because of the wait time I bought a big metal lathe and modified it for working on cues and it was in my shop in one week.

Chris's lathe was in such a demand that he lost my sale because of waiting time. When your think about it, that is not a bad position to be in if your in business. The economy however was a lot better in 2001 than today.

Anyone trying to compete in this market has some big shoes to fill to be successful in the long run.

But the Quality?

"Made at the convience of the Designer/Seller, at the expense of the
Machine Process/Funtion".

If you're sending out sub-standard stuff, you know who you are.
I will not mention names.. But, I've bought and used their stuff and this is my Conclusion.
Thanks for sticking me with your "Stuff"..

Alton < Stupid Buyer.. Learned the hard way..;)

Although I don't really know for sure what Alton was referring to, I don't believe it was your posting. I think he was referring to some type of copied equipment that he purchased that was not up to snuff.

I, myself, see no problem with competition amongst tool makers, equipment builders or consumable suppliers. Competition drives both quality and mechanical improvements and competition in pricing. If it wasn't for Teddy Roosevelt breaking up Standard Oil they would be the only oil producer in the country and we may be paying 10.00 a gallon instead of 3.00. Competition in industries is what keeps prices at their best and quality at their highest.

Now don't take what I state as that just because a price is the lowest that it IS the same quality as an item that looks the same. As a purchaser you must do your homework also to determine the quality, price and after sale help with issues should they occur. There are many scam artists around offering sub-quality products. By having competition however, a person can have a choice of buying a higher dollar but a known commodity or taking a chance and saving some money gambling that the quality is similar.

Well said Dick- I agree completely! (& I don't think Alton was referring to Trent either)

If you ordered one today you would not be #12 in line. You would only be #8. :)

IMHO - you didn't over react at all.

But Alton certainly did 'under explain', if he wasn't refering to you
and/or your associate, he should have made that a lot more clear
than he did. Or even better, put it another thread.

Not trying to be the Posting Police, but.
In the spirit of full disclosure - I should point out that I have had
prior dealings with Trent for, of all things, one of Chris's lathes,
and found him to be a stand up guy.
