In todays edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram there is a story about 'ol U.J. "haunting" his old hangout, Fast Freddy's in south Ft. Worth. It has a picture of him and his favorite old chair on the front page and the complete story in section B. Thought that was pretty cool! Go to www.star-telegram.com for the story.

Here's a better link to take you directly to the article, written by Pulitzer Prize nominee R.A. Dyer, entitled "The Hustler Who Haunts":

a photo of U. J. Puckett

Here's a shot of U. J. (on the left) with Sid Mann and Steve Mizerak. Mike Haines took this photo at one of the Reds tournaments in Houston, TX around 1983-1984.

U.J. always was the prankster. If he could find a way to play one on people from the beyond, he would be having a glorious time now.

Makes me want to go down there and sit in that room. U.J. was my buddy even if he liked to call me "ball nob". He said there was a town in Louisiana with that name and I reminded him of it???

He was the only man I ever met who could sleep with his eyes open and even talk to you from his sleep. I swear it's true. When he woke up I would remind him that he asked me about something when I came in, and he would say "I did?"

His best game - "One And Stop" One Pocket. Even Ronnie wouldn't play him that game in the 60's and early 70's. You can make only one ball at a time and then you have to play safe.
